What paved route can I take? I remember something about a ferry that connects down towards Quebec City.

Also, is there a ferry connecting to the France owned islands?

The only way back (by land) is the Trans-Labrador Highway. Sorry, it isn't paved. Be prepared for hundreds of kms of dust and flying stones. As you mentioned, there is a coastal boat that serves the isolated communities of the cote-nord in Quebec. You could probably catch it in Blanc Sablon. I don't know anything about it. Maybe Signal can help you.......

That would be the Relais Nordik ferry. There's also some info on the Société des traversiers du Québec site.

And the paved highway on the north shore in Quebec goes as far as Kegashka. From there I think you take the ferries to the various towns up to Blanc-Sablon.

The highway is Route 138. Which incidentally is the same road as Sherbrooke St. in downtown Montreal. You can follow it for almost 1500 km to Kegashka.

What are traffic counts like on the Bonaventure right now? I'd be very careful before dismantling a freeway and replacing it with a surface arterial.

58k . they know what they're doing, the demolition started last year. Griffintown and Faubourg des Récollets will be accessible much more easily. Right now, the Bonaventure looks like trash and does not deserve to be part of the urban landscape of Montreal in the 21st century

I did a circle-trip on the Trans-Labrador Highway from my home in Nova Scotia about 6 years ago. My Trip Report here:

…..and a couple of updates to that report: Although the Trans-Labrador Highway is still gravel from the coast to Goose Bay (540km)….the 530 km from Goose Bay to Labrador City is now paved.

Just beyond Lab City you cross into Quebec on QC389 and then it’s another 550 km to Baie-Comeau.

Near the Fire Lake mine, asphalt begins and continues for about 100km, wide and straight to the abandoned town site of Gagnon……then seemingly in the middle of nowhere the road splits into a wide boulevard, the former town’s main street with a grassed median, curb/gutter and sidewalks. But everything else is gone…flattened!







At the huge Hydro Quebec Manic 5 Dam….pavement begins for the 220km run down to Baie Comeau and QC138 or the ferry over to Matane.

Nice video Franks, but the Hopewell Rocks are located in NB, not NS.

BTW, about 200 tonnes of rock just broke off one of the larger flowerpot formations just the other day.

Yeah I noticed my mistake... but it's too late My apologies.

Oh yeah ? 200 tonnes is huge ! It is really changing the look of the monuments ? ... The Rocher Percé, in Percé, Québec has the same problem.

Was the highway tolled from the start or did they slap it on after the fact? It's a nice highway and the toll is very reasonable.

There was a particularly expensive mountain pass that needed to be build to complete the highway so they decided to introduce a toll to pay for the section. 104 is entirely free other than the single tolling point in the video, to pay for the construction costs of the Cobequid pass.

BC needs to do that in certain places on the Trans Canada to make it a lot safer and to divide the highway (4 or more lanes). I can't see too many people objecting unless the tolls are outrageously high.

I filmed southbound Macleod Tr on Saturday. It turned out a bit glary, so I might not use it.

This video should be cross-posted in the Ugly Canada thread.

But, this run on Hwy 22 turned out ok. I've learned more editing, graphics (thanks AB Transportation) and video creation tools, so there will be more road vids from me.

From about 2:30 to 3:10 in that video, it actually looks a lot like Southern Ontario. rolling hills with scattered trees around farms. Almost indistinguishable, really.
