Your YYZ chart really shows the dominance of Air Canada at YYZ. Pearson still has the most foreign tails, but YVR and YUL have proportionately many more for the amount of intl' they see compared to YYZ.

Done. Only took out the projected, as I didn't want to touch the rest.

Two thoughts...

Wow, the difference between TO and MTL is more than I thought.

Also, St. John's was the only one that was WAY less than what was projected. About 50% less than we were expected to be in 2015. Most of the rest were in the right range.

Just a quick correction - the number for Montreal are 2014. We don't have 2015 out yet.

I didn't even notice TAM missing. I thought of WOW Air and Brussels Airlines. Just realized the 2pw TUI Netherlands is missing.

Let's make it easy for GS:

- 4pw WOW Air to Reykjavik with A321
- 5pw Brussels Airlines to Brussels with A333
- 2pw TUI Netherlands to Amsterdam with 763
- 2pw TAM Brazil to Sao Paolo with 763

Icelandair will also be a mix of 757/767 for S16.

Also, Jet Airways is Delhi/Amsterdam, not Delhi/LHR. This is why Brussels Airlines is starting YYZ. Because Jet is changing its scissor hub from BRU to AMS.

Methinks S16 should be a go - they're looking to hire JFK and YYZ based pilots. March April start date.

Short sighted imo - they could've made this one work year round given the favourable connections to countless Russian cities and the elimination of YYZ's Aeroflot and Transaero routes.

YYZ has non-stop to Europe tied down. I'm waiting on JU's BEG service in 2018. Hopefully JFK works for them.

From CAPA, it looks like Finnair did indeed discountinue YYZ:

Scheduling changes in Sep-2015 indicate Finnair will increase Chicago service, make Miami a year-round destination and discontinue Toronto service.

Weird, considering they only recently upgraded the service to 5 times weekly a couple of years ago.

Some subsidiary of Aeroflot is reconsidering YYZ for late 2016 or early 2017 so maybe Finnair is reconsidering their strategy, who knows. But this could have easily been a year round flight that should have worked.

Edit: Now checking their website, it still shows YYZ as a destination:

Yes, there’s just so much history at Gander Airport.....and sadly, when the modern Terminal Building opened in1959, it probably never saw its full potential. This was right at the dawn of the jet age with the new ‘707s and DC-8s now capable of overflying Gander on transatlantic flights. But go back just a couple of years into the mid ‘50s and a lot of the world’s major airlines were there with their Constellations, DC-4s, DC-6s etc .....Pan Am, TWA, BOAC, El Al Israel, Lufthansa, Air France, Alitalia, Sabena, Scandinavian, Swissair etc were all in Gander and pretty impressive for small town (population today: 10,000) in the wilds of central Newfoundland.

I’m in Gander often and usually while waiting for my return flight to Halifax on an Air Canada Express CRJ……I get a chance to look around and reminisce about what Gander once was.







During the Cold War Era and right up to 1989…….Gander was a well know place for defections to the West from the Soviet Bloc countries.

Aeroflot, Interflug (East Germany) Czechoslovak Airlines and Cubana…..all stopped there and many passengers got their first taste of freedom when allowed into the Gander Terminal while refueling…..then defected during the stopover.

Canada would have an iconic Mountie ‘conveniently’ stationed in the waiting room whom passengers could approach and ask for refugee status in Canada.

The International Departures Lounge is now on the Heritage Canada - National Trust Top Ten Endangered Places. It’s listed as the "the most important modernist room in Canada” and could be demolished as the airport authority downsizes to a terminal that reflects the current level of traffic …..regional flights on CRJs, B-1900s, Dash-8s, Q-400s and seasonal ‘737s.

Here’s the Terminal in the 1970’s:





That large mural is still there today and visible from a down-sized domestic gate area now partitioned off from the international lounge.




And all that infrastructure is still there and probably will be even if the terminal building is downsized to handle the regular refueling stops or diversions just like it did on 9-11…..that fateful day when nearly 10,000 people just dropped in….. nearly doubling Gander’s population and they all had to be housed and fed for several days (watch NBC’s Tom Brokaw’s Gander piece here):

And just down the road from Gander......is Botwood, Newfoundland where the original Pan American Airways Terminal still stands from the transatlantic Flying Boat era and now a museum. It was a stopover on the route between LaGuardia (New York) Shediac, New Brunswick (Moncton) and Foynes, Ireland.

^ Amazing history. Gander Airport is much more than a piece of local history, it's really a heritage crown jewel.

I had never heard of Botwood before either... incredible that the humble old Pan Am Terminal is still there.
