Looking south from TD Centre in Halifax. Most of the office towers are behind the camera but most of the new construction is happening in the southern end of the downtown area. If you look closely you can see a white crane that will soon be raised up to the height of the taller yellow crane in the middle of the shot. You can also see the glass cladding going up on the Nova Centre on the right side of the photo. It's hard to tell how it will turn out but I kinda like the different shades.

Garrison Woods. It's a Canada Lands Company redevelopment of a closed down army barracks. Developed in the late 90s. It's actually only about 4 km as the crow flies from the centre of downtown Calgary.

There is a sister development called Currie, that's currently under construction (1/3 built out), which was the centre of the base, including a bunch of repurposing of some really interesting historic buildings. It's a pretty high density development.

(Garrison Woods is to the left in this image)

Beautiful setting for sure. The sea of glass condo towers, not so much. I actually hate them and are the one big negative for me. Vancouver's traditional CBD is far nicer.

Yeah the mountains and water are gorgeous, but that's definitely Vancouver's ugly side.

I suppose I'm expected to pile on here because of my "hate" of Vancouver, but...what? Are we looking at the same thing?

That's a pin cushion. Mississauga with mountains. Kinda ugly, though maybe not overwhelmingly so. The scenery outside the city's nice, of course.

Shots focusing on the CBD seem to be the best ones for Vancouver.

I love the residential towers surrounding downtown Van. The more, the better. Looks good from the air and creates nice urban environments at ground level.

As an urban aficionado I totally disagree, and find it weird that you would say this, as I think it's objectively not true, but personal preference wins the day, I guess.

I mean, Gastown and that area are great at ground level, but those new glass condos near the stadium? The streets there are blandly suburban. Mississauga, essentially.

Mississauga is a stretch but they are pretty sterile.

I'm a huge Vancouver lover but even I can't find much to like in that aerial picture above.

Same here, it never looks great in aerials to me. The way the buildings are laid out it loses much of the density you get at other angles.

I agree with rousseau, Chadillaccc, and TorontoDrew. I've viewed countless photos of the streets at the base of those Vancouver glass condos and it's quite abysmal imo. It says a lot that those sidewalks are empty of people. They're suburban developments and quite the opposite of what I seek in a big city downtown.

And I'd argue that even in skyline shots it's only at first glance that it looks good. On closer inspection it's a sea of soul less monotony. I'd pull my hair out if I had to live in that neighbourhood. 'Mississauga with mountains' as rousseau put it. The CBD looks many notches better and a proper urban environment.
