There are certainly "grey areas" between the various Moncton threads, therefore it's important to read them all!

Here is the site plan for the proposed expansion of the Mountain Way Estates subdivision off of Twin Oaks Drive.

Of note:

1) - Maplehurst Drive will be extended and will eventually connect Mountain Road all the way through to Ryan Street.
2) - It is interesting to see the developing street grid and the interconnections proposed between this subdivision and the expanded sections of Stone Haven Estates and Liberty Hill Estates.
3) - Storm water retention ponds figure prominently in this development. This is of course a new development requirement by the city. It is interesting to note however how the developer has integrated a connector to the Northwest Trail system between the retention pond and the existing trail system. I think this is quite clever.......

The vacant lot on Mountain Road between Wheaton's and Wine Expert has sold.

I wonder what might go there? It's as unusual shape, but then again so is the lot on the other side of Wheaton's where a successful commercial strip development has been built. Despite it's odd angulation WRT Mountain Road, that strip has 100% occupancy. Mind you, that strip is filled with services rather than retail but it has still done extremely well.

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but has anyone heard about the new Crystal Mountain Party Palace opening on St. George Street. It will have laser tag, virtual golf and arcade games for redemption prizes. Also, three party rooms for birthday parties, business parties, bachelor/bachelorette parties.

Awesome - great to have some entertainment for kids in a central location again. And the name is obviously a play on 'Crystal Palace'. Location is 601 St George Blvd, so almost downtown.

The Magnetic Hill Zoo is apparently a big tourism generator for the province:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/magnetic-hill-zoo-economics-1.3429816

Quote:
The Magnetic Hill Zoo says it generated $42 million in economic spinoffs in 2014.

An economic analysis prepared by the University of Moncton and presented to Moncton city council by Bruce Dougan, the zoo's general manager, on Monday said the zoo generated $1 million in revenue for the federal government and $800,000 for the province (through taxes).
Quote:
"This year with the extended season, we had a 22 per cent increase (in visitors)," said Dougan.

"We're at 171,000 visitors for 2015."

Dougan says he's considering extending the season even further, but unpredictable weather could make that a challenge
65% of zoo visitors are from outside the greater Moncton region. That speaks volumes to the appeal of the zoo as a tourism attraction.

There is no question that the zoo is a crown jewel in the city's tourism industry. The recent growth in visitors to the zoo is likely related to the new big cat exhibit. Imagine if more themed areas were added to the zoo with more signature animal attractions like giraffes or elephants. There is room to expand out there........

Regarding this request before the PAC:

The request has been approved, but I gather this doesn't necessarily mean that NBLC has decided to expand at their current location. Meadowdale Properties made the request before the PAC just in order to ensure that their proposal to NBLC was a valid one that the city agreed with. NBLC still has not officially decided to expand here or to relocate elsewhere in the northwest end. We should know soon.........

The province has set aside $1.3M in this year's budget for land acquisition in the northwest end for a new anglophone middle school (grades 6-8).

So, this project appears to be a go. Traditionally, it takes about three years before a new school opens, so presumably this new school will be ready in 2019 or 2020.

The location of the new school has not been revealed. Once opened, both Evergreen Park and Northrup Frye schools will revert to K-5 status. I don't know if this new school will have any effect on the Magnetic Hill School. I suspect not.

Just a guess based on what is already in the area, and what is already planned for the area in terms of housing, and potentially commercial project.

I'm going to guess the new school will be built somewhere on Ryan Street between the 1300-1500 block range near Charles lutes Road. But that's just an educated guess based on the plans on the area.

(No the pun was just an accident.)

I was just left a broadcast voicemail from the greg ingersol that the school was officially approved last night. However there are no further details on location etc. My kids attend magnetic hill, there had been no talk of changes for us that i am aware of though.

There is some speculation amongst parents as to whether or not we would eventually be moved to moncton high from harrison trimble as the north end population ages and grows.

Yes. I had mentioned back around Feb. 5th that they were opening on Feb. 8th. I like the changes and the addition of the aquariums. We were pleasantly surprised that the staff was friendly, food came quickly and it was very good. Definitely will go back now.

The house/lot between Kim Long and the daycare on Mountain Rd. has sold. I'm not sure if its commercial or residential but I assume commercial. No idea what could go there considering the difficult of access- maybe it's the daycare next to it planning to expand or something similar?

It is a Commercial lot, or at least was listed as such.
I was looking at it, and thought because of it's awkward location (right at the lights)

If I'm not mistaken there was a lot on Champlain Street right across from Mathieu Martin High School with the same issue, and there is a commercial strip, and from the parking to the road is set as a 4 way stop light.

Lot in question:

Commercial development would indeed be difficult because of the lot's awkward location between the lights at Evergreen Drive and Gorge Road. The Kim Long driveway is immediately across from the Gorge Road intersection and this driveway could be shared. I would imagine there are absolutely no circumstances where the driveways into the daycare could be shared (safety reasons).

The daycare is very busy, and it's (grossly inadequate) parking lot is frequently a zoo in the early morning and also in the early evening. I wonder if the daycare hasn't purchased this lot for expansion? There is an insatiable need for new daycare spaces in the northwest end.

Work on the crossing point of the Northwest Trail across Falcon Drive (access point for the soon to be developed Liberty Hill Estates in northwest Moncton.

(from Councillor Dawn Arnold's Facebook page)

The early spring weather is certainly giving an early boost to the construction season around town.

Moncton Kia is opening a second location in Moncton, at 1545 Mountain Road (the Moncton Auto Centre near Trinity Drive). The current Kia location on Lewisville Road will also remain open.
