Yes, I would say that the city is exploring the possibility of having the YMCA operating the north end community centre on their behalf. This would certainly save the city money, but I'm not sure this is what the north end residents had in mind when they were lobbying for a community centre.

It will be interesting to see the results of the survey..........

I know this development is on the borderlands of the northwest end, but this area is not downtown either. I have therefore arbitrarily included the MID area into the [Moncton] Northwest thread.........

New Royal Bank Customer Contact Centre (under construction).

Site plan:

The new contact centre is being built behind those two office buildings on St. George Blvd, just to the west of Wheeler Blvd.

Rendering:

The turnabout in front of the contact centre, between the two existing office buildings is new. In addition, there are plans for a connecting corridor between all three buildings. There is going to be a cafeteria built in the 1077 St. George Building to service all three buildings.

The developers in this city really love 2 storey buildings, it seems to be a trend.

You know, I don't know why we never bothered making an industrial park thread. Put everything from MID, Victory, Caledonia and the Dieppe Parks into one place. What do you think?

It's a thought. It might cut down a lot on the post count in the Dieppe thread though. I betcha a good third of the posts for Dieppe concern activity in the industrial parks.

More Upgrades for Magnetic Hill Zoo

Magnetic Hill Zoo will get an injection of money to upgrade its site and add a few new exhibits.

Bruce Dougan , the general manager of the zoo, said he'd like to expand on the facility's African area.
He said the zoo would like to build an African village and add a number of smaller exhibits, including bringing in flamingos and different smaller cats (for this African themed area).

Dougan said the zoo is looking to the city to invest about $500,000 to make those improvements over the next few years.

In June, the zoo opened up a $1.4-million exhibit its Big Cat exhibit, featuring two Amur tigers — Alik and Anya — and a leopard, named Katushka.

"We've seen a spike in attendance, which we'd really hoped we would see, between a 10 to 11 per cent increase," said Dougan.

"We've seen an increase in revenue because of the exhibit."

Dougan said it was a record year for attendance, with 156,000 visitors.

Personal note - I'm glad to see city council "gets it" as far as the zoo is concerned. It is a top tourism generator for the city and as such, deserves ongoing investment to keep the attraction fresh and to keep people coming back. Bruce Dougan in many ways is the zoo. He must be getting close to retirement age. The city should be very careful in choosing his replacement when the time comes. Dougan has the "vision thing". His replacement will need that too.........

I saw a light on in that unit the other night and was wondering if something was up. Hastings Ridge is turning into more of a services plaza rather than a shopping plaza, but that's OK too. Lot's of room for expanded services in the northwest end......

Some potential news on the NW Moncton liquor store front.

I was at the NBLC store at Valhalla Place this evening and was chatting up the clerk who was serving me. He stated that they were to be open in their new location by next October. He also said it would be a "new build" rather than a leased space. He wasn't exactly sure where they would be moving to, but he was aware of some of the options and he favoured the NE corner of Mountain/Sheraton Green, across from the Jean Coutu Pharmacy.

That particular lot is vacant and ready to build on, and has the added advantage of a controlled intersection which should make access to the store a lot more convenient than their current location.

I tend to believe him. That would be a convenient location, and would only really be a block down from their current location, which wouldn't be too disruptive for their current clientele.

It would be a great location for them since it's still easy access for all there original patrons, and possibly easier location to get to for some new ones as well. I was put under the impression that the lot at the corner, and the one next door where to be purchased together to build a strip mall almost like the Lounsbury building. But I'm guessing that was probably off the table after the potential developers seen how many vacant units, and how many new builds there are in the city, and surrounding areas.

P.S. I know a developer who had his eye on those 2 properties since before the Car Auction business moved out of there.

Skipper Jacks on Mapleton Road is now back open. I drove by there tonight and it was crowded with about 20 cars in front.

The Greater Moncton Area will soon be down to one Holiday Inn Express in March. The HIE on Mountain Rd, across from Casino NB, will be rebranded to a Days Inn. This is because the property failed to conform to HIE brand standards and can no longer do business under the Holiday Inn Express banner.

More news on the Moncton NW NBLC store:

According to this site plan posted with this months Moncton PAC agenda, it would appear that the liquor commission has opted to expand their existing store in Valhalla Place rather than building an entirely new store.

The expansion will give the store 13,260 sq ft rather than the existing 9,060 sq ft.

I don't get it! The shaded expansion area on that plan, is it not already store footage already? Store office and walk-in refrigerator storage?

I was under the impression that NBLiquor in this area is basically the same situation as the Costco fiasco. Too small for the demand.

If NBLiquor is simply adding more shelves for more products, it's not going to fix the overloaded traffic in&out of this mini-mall.

Judging from this photo from the PAC documents, I would say that the liquor store will be expanding outwards to the east, and taking over the space formerly occupied by the Old Time Meat Market.

Perhaps the meat market will move down the strip to occupy the space which formerly contained the OMG Market..........

Regarding your comment about the congestion in the parking lot, this information comes from the PAC document:

They're planning to decrease the number of parking spaces. Expect the congestion to get even worse......

In the downtown thread someone refers to a new African restaurant and corrected himself to say its on Killam.

I checked and found out it's terrible news! The article has a picture which I instantly recognized as the old Asian Garden location! I checked their Facebook and they have closed

I think someone had already posted about the closure of Asian Garden on here. But it does not surprise me they closed it din't seem they could keep staff...
