All those delays are cutting into the bottom line for sure, but do you know what really hurt their profit margins? If they spent millions of dollars to dig a hole and then just gave up. Something tells me this hole won't have a great ROI. Despite all their troubles they just have to keep going.
Right. I rarely check this particular thread anymore because the posts are mostly useless speculation or complaining and depress me. I don't see how they can unring this bell. Whatever the issues are that have slowed progress, they just have to soldier on with this one.

Behold, the tallest building in America, the Chicago Spire!

Your missing out on my magnum opus.

Almost 2/5th of a million people have viewed my ongoing photography exhibit. It's a testament to the will of humanity to trudge forward when all seems hopeless and click, again and again, only to see more photos of dirt. Some might think it's a con, but I'm playing the long game. I reckon I have to, since this is the site I've chosen.

My point exactly. Ships can and do hit the rocks.

However the economics of a hotel and a condo building are very different. This building stopping would be equivalent to a fully sold condo building stopping. The Spire fell through because they couldn't sell enough units.

It could be a horizontal strut for internal bracing of the excavations support system.

Oh, that pipe? It looks like they've uncovered the sewer pipe for the Residence at the Ritz Carlton. They're just being careful that they don't break it by accident.

Oh. that's just the shaft that Mahoney gave to Brook Lenfest when he unloaded this site on him for $12 million back in 2010.

I'm not sure, but the Residences at the Ritz Carlton HOA is pushing to have it designated for historical preservation.

106 days behind schedule per Tutor but probably some time can be made up.
The steel pipe is a strut and a second one will be installed. It is to keep the soil in place since there isn't enough room to use soil nails.
Struts, Rakers, and Tie Backs take time to install before more digging can happen. Can't just dig a hole and wait for everything to collapse into it.
Reaching bottom is by June 27 or hopefully earlier.
Foundation mat pour by August 17 or hopefully earlier.

There's your update.

after waiting so long for this to start I think everyone hoped to see more progress than this by now- including the folks paying for all this work. Nothing wrong with that. I think everyone is smart enough to know that the contractors didn't expect for things to take this long- but that doesn't make it less disappointing that things have progressed so little. It's the internet, people comment- that's how it goes.

It's not as bad as I thought.
