YYC Summer 2016 International Flights

Congrats to YYC on nailing that PEK flight!

Here is the complete International Summer flight list for YYC:
Not including sun flights.

Air Canada
LHR Daily 789
FRA Daily 789
NRT Daily 788

British Airways
LHR Daily 788

KLM
AMS Daily 333

Westjet
LGW 5x weekly 763 **NEW**

Air Transat
LGW 3x weekly 333
MAN 1x weekly 333
MAN/GLA 1x weekly 333
CDG 1x weekly 333
AMS 1x weekly 333

Condor
FRA 3x weekly 763

Edelweiss
ZRH 1x weekly 332 and 1x weekly 333 **NEW**

Hainan
PEK 3x weekly 788 **NEW**

That's 55 weekly flights to Europe and Asia so about 8 per day.
Up from 49 per week last summer.

Not bad at all!! ✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️

The only subcategory taking a hit is the sun flying.

A quick look at sun flights:

Sunwing reducing from 8 weekly to 4
Air Canada reducing from 4 weekly to only 1 (CUN)
Air Transat no change - 2 weekly using Enerjet
Westjet no change - 10 weekly

Total sun flights dropping from 24 to 17 per week.
Total international about the same 72 in 2016 vs 73 in 2015.

considering our city is currently in recovery mode, that is mighty nice..
This must be a yyc record for most international services on a given season over its entire history??

Bendigo you say, I stopped in bendigo for a pint of Toohey's on my way to see a friend in Walkabout Creek. If you are in the neighbourhood, say hi to Mike for me.

Interesting that the Calgary-Beijing flight will be over land almost the entire way.

What a waste of the 787's range. Horizon could have done the route with a Q400.

I think my wording is definitely ill timed. I guess the recovery was really meant for once the new service starts this summer and assuming we get the federal aid badly needed transferred over by the time the new flights begin. At this present it is pretty bad but hopefully come June things will start to turn a bit upwards. The Chinese investment into our market though gutsy, definitely will help.

There is a place for carpet, eg. in holdroom seating areas, Lounges, etc. where it provides some warmth and sound absorption. But I do agree it should be maintained and kept clean, which can be an expensive and time consuming task.

No, nothing to do with IFP. I can't say much more but it's something big

Good news about Beijing, so what are the odds of a couple more flights to Asia, plus Dubai and Brazil flights over the next 5 yrs?

This does not bode well for either YYC or YEG.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on...lberta-economy-ceo-says/article28672216/

Quote:
WestJet Airlines Ltd. is bracing for a prolonged downturn in the Alberta economy with actions that could include job reductions, chief executive officer Gregg Saretsky says.

“We are having to look at some voluntary programs to shrink the size of the business,” Mr. Saretsky told The Globe and Mail’s editorial board Tuesday.

The collapse in the price of oil that has battered the Alberta economy has taken a bite out of WestJet’s revenue, has caused a major shift in capacity out of that province to other markets and led the airline to ask plane maker Boeing Co. and Bombardier Inc. to defer deliveries of new planes.
Quote:
The potential staff reduction plan includes determining how many layers of management exist between Mr. Saretsky and the pilots, flight attendants, agents and mechanics who are the front-line employees to see if one layer can be removed, he said.

While he expects the decline in the Alberta economy to deepen, he described WestJet’s moves as “tapping the brakes. We’re not jamming them on; tapping the brakes lightly to slow things down.”
Quote:
But that tapping of the brakes includes something WestJet has never done, which is to return leased airplanes to aircraft leasing companies instead of renewing the leases.

It has renewed leases on five of eight aircraft this year and sent the remaining three back to the leasing companies and will return all six airplanes whose leases end in 2017.

Boeing has agreed to delay until late 2017 deliveries of two 737NG airplanes that WestJet was scheduled to receive this December and another that was slated for delivery in May, 2017.

...

Mr. Saretsky said Bombardier has denied WestJet’s request to defer deliveries of Q400 turboprop planes.

“They’ve said, ‘no, you’re committed to the dates,’ so we’ll take [the planes],” he said.

Airport is ending free 30 minute parking. It's a shame as that was the only reason I would pop in for a coffee or to look through some of the stores while picking up or dropping someone off.

Remember free short-term parking at Calgary airport? It's over

ZOEY DUNCAN, CALGARY HERALD

If you’ve made a habit of parking in the Calgary airport’s short-term lot and picking up someone within a half-hour, you’ll now have to budget for a $3 fee.

According to YYC.com, the days of free parking for the first 30 minutes in the short-term lots adjacent to the arrivals area at the airport are over. The fee is $3 dollars, if you use the facility for any period of time up to 30 minutes.
