There is a Mr Sub in Winnipeg? When I was living in southern Ontario I always went to Mr. Sub over Subway. I'll have to swing buy if i'm ever in the area.

I think there's one in Garden City mall as well.

I only started liking subway when they got flatbread, to be honest. I'm not sure I could go somewhere that didn't have it or something like it.

There is one in mall but it must be some what current as Winnipeg was just down to the one on Henderson Hwy for the longest time.

I remember they had a few in Winnipeg back when they were known as Mr. Submarine. Two I can think of off hand were in the Polo Park area (Ness and Madison?) and another location north of McPhillips around McDermot.

Regent. Whatever that strip mall across from the Bay/Zellers/Target wing is dubbed, Eastwinds or something like that.

Yeah the restaurant space behind the Domo on Ness was originally a Mr. Sub.

Another restaurant/lounge is opening in the same building as Maque on Stafford

There was a Mr Sub in Ft Richmond too. And I think North Pembina also. I guess the Subway explosion crowded them out.

Have we reached peak Tim Horton's in downtown Winnipeg? I usually go a few times a week and the lines are never as long as they once were. I'm sure it's partly because there are several locations, but people seem to be opting for other restaurants now. I had lunch at the one on Graham and where three years ago it would have been packed, today there were plenty of chairs and barely a line to speak of.

With the number of Tim's and Starbucks locations around, I wonder if downtown Winnipeg's market for coffee chains is saturated now?

Probably saturated in terms of dish water coffee (Tims) and the really bitter stuff Starbucks serves.

Incidentally, we here in the East Exchange seem to be very undeserved in terms of these types of franchises. So there could be some growth over here.

Good point... there are really no coffee chains to speak of north of Portage and Main, and downtown runs all the way to Higgins (officially, at least).

In that regard, it's kind of surprising that Second Cup/Starbucks/Tim Hortons/Robins hasn't set up shop on Main or King to cater to the Exchange hipster/civic bureaucrat crowd, but I'm sure the local restaurateurs and café owners appreciate that.

Yet in the East Exchange we have independent coffee shops Parlour, Joe & Lily and the Forth within blocks of each other.

Of note, I've been in Forth 2 Saturdays in a row now and it's been very busy. Constant flow of people coming in.

It's the cafe sharing space with Dogwood... In the old Coyote Club building. I don't recall the buildings name (EDIT: It's apparently called the Dawson Richardson Building), but directly to the West of Galpern/Porter.

It's a large place as they occupy the entire main floor with their coffee shop/café along with an art gallery in the basement. They will be roasting on site.

Been a few years since I was there but the RRC campus on Princess had a full service Tims that seemed to also heavily target that exact market.

I think part of the pull back in customer demand on the large chain coffee places is a mix of change in tastes/demographics and the expansion of the artisan coffee shops into downtown. The younger demographic seems to put increased value in going a little bit further to frequent one of those artisan places such as Parlour.

Yeah, that's true... those places didn't exist 6 or 7 years ago, at least not right downtown.

But that said, the new wave places pump through a lot fewer customers than Tim's at their peak when lineups were not unusual and I'm sure they were putting through hundreds of customers an hour from around 8 in the morning to the end of the noon hour.

I guess the RRC Tim's counts as a chain north of Portage and Main, but I tend to think of locations like that one or the ones in hospitals as mainly "in house", although I guess a lot of city workers are probably hopping over to go there.

The 2016 roll up the rim contest is coming back soon according to an email that I got from Tim Horton's today, that may bring the crowds back to the slower Tim Horton's locations.
