@KellyRamseyYEG Just imagine those #yegdt views! Last week, we began installing our major mechanical equipment and penthouse steel.

^^ More for Airboy.. But of note to anyone who's interested in all things Div.15, those fan units are a relatively new system that uses an array of compartmentalized axial fans, all run off a common VFD rather than one large centrifugal fan like you typically see. I looked at a similar system at Meadowlark Mall a little while back. Pretty neat setup and awesome for servicing and redundancy, as you can pull a fan cubicle and work on it on a bench while still maintaining your air flow

Fan Wall technology is being used more often. Its great for renovations as well. I believe it was used for the Library Parkade Ventilation Upgrade. And based on those photos it looks like they are using 100% outside air. Or doing heat recovery through coils.

Looks almost like a heat wheel setup, doesn't it ?

Yes the system at Meadowlark was a retro. They removed one 250hp centrifugal and put an an array of 20 fans with 5Hp direct drive motors. Don't have to do the math to see savings there

I just changed out all my tower supply fan motors and VFD's last year or I'd look at it. Maybe for the retail mall, as I think I've got some capital for next year

We'll talk.

Did an assessment on a tower last year, not one of yours, the original design was from about 79. built in place fans. only was to retro the building is to do fan wall, and also seal all the cinder block walls they used for the fan housing.

on another note, we are noticing a lot of work starting to show up, work that was differed due to high costs.also quite a bit of retro and renovation work. a couple in-fact that will take a year of engineering.

Any Mech Engineers looking for work should message me.

Haha, wow, I tried to visit ProCura's website to get some info, and got hit with a malicious URL redirect. Glad my anti-malware software caught that.

Seriously, can't those guys even operate a website properly?

Don't even try unless you REALLY trust your anti-malware.

Yes I dread the day I have to replace a scroll cage on one of my big blowers. Chicago still makes them but it'd be an interesting trick getting one in

You should drop by the complex for a coffee sometime and I can show you around

Sounds good. I've got some very interesting projects coming up, including a scrubber on my main boiler stack that Ofer is tinkering with.

Didn't know you were working on my west genset for us. Can't wait till that's turned over. That old machine was a beast

have been following the posts pre and post this one with some interest although probably with less than full understanding (i know just enough to be dangerous ).

on this topic, is it an option for constant and not variable volume flows or pretty much tailored for vav systems?

I could see applications in constant volume systems easily. if these systems are available with DC motors (I imagine these can be spec'd Any number of ways) you have the energy saving and wear and tear benefits of being able to soft start your fans without requiring a VFD. You still have the benefit of lower amperage per CFM and the serviceability

Of course more moving parts and more bits & pieces means more work down the road, I'd be curious to see how a 40 Year old fan wall stands up to my 40 year old Chicago blowers

I've seen them in Healthcare where pressurization needs to be constant.

Much tighter static pressure control I'm sure with a system like that

As much as I LOVE HVAC jargon... the VFD in me hopes that the BAS in you shuts down a little of the AHU.

Paula Simons: Urban balcony vs slim tower: Edmonton needs a vision for its view

PAULA SIMONS, EDMONTON JOURNAL
More from Paula Simons, Edmonton Journal

The little triangle of land wedged between Jasper Avenue and 101st Avenue on 96th Street is one of downtown’s ugliest eyesores.

The .2-hectare parcel is home to two boarded-up little buildings, one pink, one blue, surrounded by a fraying chain-link fence. The garbage-strewn land, halfway between the Shaw Conference Centre and the majestic St. Barbara’s Russian Orthodox Cathedral, is a bleak pocket of urban blight.

It also commands one of the most spectacular views of the North Saskatchewan River valley, a panoramic vista that includes Louise McKinney Park, the Muttart Conservatory, and everything in between and beyond.

The city has been negotiating for years to buy the parcel as part of The Quarters redevelopment. The plan was to turn the site into an “urban balcony.” It sounds like someplace a hipster Juliet might await her hip-hop Romeo. But the city’s plan is to create a public green space and lookout point, and to ensure that the view belongs to everyone.

City council’s executive committee is supposed to vote Tuesday on a city report, recommending the city expropriate the site, over the wishes of the owners of the land, Suncor and the Alldritt Land Corporation. Expropriation would require the city to pay the fair market value of the land, which is currently accessed by the city’s tax department at $1.07 million.

It begins...

Royalty credit program worth $500 million could spark $5-billion petrochemical investment: Alberta government

JODIE SINNEMA
More from Jodie Sinnema

Alberta’s government will award $500 million worth of royalty credits to new petrochemical facilities in a plan the NDP says will create thousands of jobs starting as early as this year.

The royalty credits won’t immediately help the petrochemical companies or investors, since they have to build new facilities with their own money.

Such companies also don’t pay royalties for converting propane or methane into fertilizers, detergents or plastics, used in everything from cellphones to car parts. But when the billion-dollar facilities are up and running in two or three years, they can then sell those royalty credits to oil and natural gas companies that supply them raw products for conversion. That will mean $500 million less in royalties to Alberta.

The program is expected to attract between $3 billion and $5 billion worth of investment, with many interested companies in Asia.

The government says each approved project could create 2,000 to 3,000 construction jobs, plus 1,000 permanent jobs once the facilities are operating.

http://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-ne...lion-petrochemical-investment-government

'Coun. Ed Gibbons, board chairman of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, said he suspects one of the first proposals will come from Williams Energy Canada, which wants to build a $3 billion propane dehydrogenation plant in Strathcona County. Up to 1,500 construction workers will be needed to build it, and 300 to 400 employees to run it.'
