I remember a couple of years ago when some French reporters covering the F1 Grand Prix in Montreal mentionned that the track was on a island near the sea. They sure are not used to large bodies of water and wide rivers out there. Lake Leman is large, but also pretty narrow so the other side always appear close.

This is the best Scarborough will ever look..the rest of the city is a hell of strip malls, and big box stores.

Is this solid rock or something less stable?

Based off the slope angle and amount of debris I'd guess it to be a soft rock.

It's good that the bluff have been eroding for centuries because it has lead to this,
The Toronto Islands
Ironically, the Toronto Island themselves are also eroding into lake Ontario.

Well, if that was the case those cousins of ours probably needed to get out more and see the world! Or spend less time in the bars on Crescent St.!

Besides the unmistakable smell and tide lines the great lakes look more like the ocean than the actual ocean near me. I'm a few blocks from this photo - there are basically no waves ever.

That's what is, in a way, unmistakably oceanic about Burrard Inlet. In most ocean cities, you build your ports on harbours to avoid the waves and the weather.

There's a new Halifax skyline webcam up: http://www.novascotiawebcams.com/en/webcams/halifax-waterfront/

It offers amazing views:

Sometimes with buildings:

They seem to have screwed up the aspect ratio of the image though.
