They have 4 digit flight numbers to quite a few destinations; PEK - YYZ is 7975.

excellent news!

It is a good start when a new airline starts up some much needed service to Asia. Add in the dreamliner and I have now lost count of how many of these 787 variants will be filling up all our gates this summer. I am going to miss the 767-333 variety..

YYC has FRA and LHR for euro network, it is time we established NRT and PEK as our asian network. 2 for 2.

Also good news on the yearly stats, definitely amazing that the airport still managed to scrounge up enough passengers to beat last years even if it was a small increase.
The first few months of this year might be a little hurting but then again I still find it hard getting used to seeing monthly pax flows in excess of 1 million pax when during the last recession and beyond monthly traffic was still in the 6 digits on several months of the year.

No announcement or pending announcement from Calgary Airports or the airline Additionally the flights cannot be booked on the website. I'm going to hold off opening the champagne until more definitive information comes forward.

Finally we have a nonstop flight to China! This would boost our tourism numbers to the Rockies and gives an opportunity for Calgarians to bypass YVR to get to China.

They already have that for some of their US destinations such as SJC-PEK (HU7989/7990), PVG-BOS (HU7961/7962), and PVG-SEA (HU7955/HU7956) and destinations to Europe and Australia.

On the flipside, is this going to be a successful route or would it be dropped in less than a year especially with the recession here in Alberta?

It should do good. It will cater mostly to the Chinese wanting to see the Calgary/Banff area and the Rockies. So it will be mostly China POS. The fact that the Canadian dollar is low will help attract the Chinese tourists. If WS codeshares, it will help the flight that much more. Even though the Chinese economy is slowing, HU feels it can make it work. Best of luck to them.

4 out of the top 5 largest cities in Canada will now have a non stop to China. That's awesome. Only a few months ago, that figure stood at 2 !

With limited feed on the Canada side, its probable this route will not be successful for HU as much as it would be under AC/CA joint venture. But this doesn't mean I think HU will drop the route just because its unprofitable.

There are several scenarios where HU would drop the route:
(1) HNA group is unwilling to continue to underwrite the airline's unprofitable operations, forcing the airline to restructure.
(2) HU finds better use for the equipment.
(3) CAAC (China government) changes the rules around one airline per international route, in which case HU is going to YVR and pulling out of YYC in a heartbeat.

It's possible that they can feed domestically even though HU interlines with WS for flights. Both HU and WS need to expand their codeshare agreements to sell flights on HU operated by WS for feeds.

You're right that it doesn't mean HU will drop the route since there is still some demand locally by the Chinese community and for Chinese tourists to visit Banff/Canmore/Lake Louise and Calgary.

I also do have fears that HU may drop the route due to lack of J pax loads from both ends and demand for it. With the slowdown in Alberta, I don't see a need for Chinese investors or business demand from both Calgary and Beijing to go ahead for that route until oil prices go above $70/bbl.

AMS was launched during a recession too....
Must be a thing to launch new flights in recessions... ?

Some sad news to report today..after over 15 years of faithful service, the airport's "pizza" carpet tile replacement has begun. The first test section is installed in Banff Hall. The carpet was first installed in 1999 and was prominetly displayed throughout the terminal. RIP Pizza Carpet.

Why do they even bother with carpet? It gives such a hotel/convention centre vibe.

Sunwing Summer 2016

As expected, Sunwing is slashing sun destination flying this summer from AB.

Both YYC and YEG will see a substantially reduced number of flights.

One each to CUN, PVR, MBJ and VRA. Looks like all four flights originate in YEG with a stop in YYC.

Last summer YYC had eight weekly flights and YEG had seven.

Freeport, Cayo Coco, Los Cabos and Santa Maria being dropped for the summer.

What a nice ride for the kids. The driver should wear cowboy gear and maybe some an-me-tonic horses in front.

YYZ has a cable pulled shuttle train. YVR has giant fish tanks and YYC has a shuttle. Edmonton will need to get a ride to avoid being left out.
