I don't know if this may have pertained to the 900 Congress deal but on Jeff Ward's show today, they mentioned that a company had just bought real estate downtown for a 36-story residential tower.

EDIT --- nevermind, they were obviously talking about the Proper and I must have gotten the floor count wrong.

This is probably the first time I've ever seen a wealthier neighborhood request that the city lift density caps/asking for taller buildings.

Me too because the NYC flatiron building is famous. But I also thought of the one in my home state that is more of the scale of Austin's future flatiron.

Actually, I think Austin's is closer in stature to the NYC than the Detroit.

It has two more stories than the Detroit version (yes, that's many less than the NYC's 21, still), but it is also significantly longer on the horizontal axis (22 sections) than either NYC (9) or Detroit (5).

If you just multiply that into square block sections, that makes out to 5x22 for Austin, 8x21 for NYC, and only 3x5 for Detroit (you subtract one from one of the dimensions to account for the fact that the first column of blocks is a single column rather than 2 columns so we can't double count it). Austin is much closer to NYC than to Detroit.

I didn't realize how many versions there are, but regardless, I like them all. I'm a fan of the design, especially when the lot shape dictates it. I can't tell if the Austin version was a design choice or shaped to fit a 'Y' street junction. 5th and West also has that one narrow corner that I like. The curved narrow angle end of Austin and NYC and the distinct roof overhang is what makes these two more simular to me, albeit out of scale to each other.
Does anyone else think the balconies look unusually deep?

I was thinking that, too. If the neighborhood is asking for it, she shouldn't try and talk them out of it. If a developer is asking to do something and everyone in the neighborhood opposes it, I can understand it a little better. But in this case, she ought to be behind it...and join them in asking for better public transportation.
