Both of Vancouver's IKEA's (Coquitlam and the newly rebuilt Richmond locations) incorporate covered, ground-level parking, with much of the retail area constructed above the parking. Mind you, they also have a lot of uncovered parking, too! And, as noted above, they are located in the suburbs, and near major roads!
I like the way that a lot of the big box stores and malls (Pacific Centre, London Drugs, Canadian Tire, Best Buy, Home Depot, Winners, Whole Foods, Save-On Foods, Costco, etc.) have setup in Downtown Vancouver, providing underground/above-ground parking for their patrons! In fact, Downtown Van is littered with parkades, including plenty of public parking spaces. With a young family in-tow, driving around Downtown and Metro is our preference, and parkades/parking nearby our destinations make life much more convenient! Even if Vancouver is a very transit oriented city, there is still a number of cars on the road, including ours when we're there!
Also, note that Downtown Van serves a population upward of 150k during the business day in an area less than 3 km x 4 km (2/3 pop. of Regina's, with our city covering an area of 12 km x 12 km or so), so that much parking is quite necessary! I think Downtown Toronto may have become more densely populated than Vancouver's by now.
