I don't know what the fuss is about. Maybe I have't taken the time to look at the cladding closely or maybe I need to stand back and look at it from a distance, but it looks fine to me. But then when I go the the site to check things out I'm just looking at a construction site and materials and getting an overall sense of what it will look like and what the game day experience will be like; I don't expect to have an orgasm when I see it.

Considering it's a building that will sit unused for 300 days a year I think it should be a significant concern. The Pattern Design was world class. Instead we're reviving a cut-rate exterior. It didn't need to be like this.

An interesting note passed my way tonight. Apparently about 30% of the exterior of the brand new $1.3B Levi Stadium is cladded with exactly the same material that some have taken issue with on the new Mosaic. In fact many new stadiums use this type of cladding because of the large exterior surface area of a stadium.

That's C$2 billion. The exterior look of NMS is far nicer tan Levi's IMO.

Brutallydishonest2 in the 'New Novak'. lol I find it amusing that you suggest spending 3% more for better cladding, then complain about how much was spent and how taxpayer pay the burden, blah blah blah etc etc

But seriously, are you working in the City of Regina Permit office or a commercial realtor, your knowledge of what is coming up or going on for construction is surprising.

BC Place is cavernous, much like SkyDome. Too large for CFL crowds.

IG Field is great stadium. There are issues of course. But for the original budget and the political football it was (having groundbreaking and digging the hole, then kicking the main backer out of the project and redesigning), it turned out not bad.

New Mosaic looks have more of the higher end finishes. Limestone blocking vs regular concrete. Translucent roof vs steel. That kind of stuff. Mosaic will be a pretty fine stadium when it opens!

Both IGF and Mosaic are similar in terms of layout, except for the endzone stands being different. But I agree, Mosaic will likely be much nicer.

Going to be an exciting spring seeing more and more of the exterior finished. I wonder how ready they will be for the demo event later this summer.

Levi's Stadium is certainly ugly. But having look at a lot of photos of it right now, I'm not seeing the same corrugated metal. Most of the visible exterior is s type of Structural Expressionism or similar. The cladding I do see appears to be metal but nothing like the corrugated stuff on Mosaic. (See: here, here, or here.) I'm just not seeing it.

The problem comes when there are good looking stadiums around:
Allianz Arena (340M EUR, 2005)
TD Place Stadium
Etc.

Your slander is amusing.

The stadium never should have happened. And since it has they should have made a good one. There is no contradiction. I do not believe in spending mass amounts of public money for the benefit of a few, select people.

But if the government is going to pour money into monuments to hubris they should be aesthetically pleasing at least. Regina's urban design for the last 50 years has been extremely lacking. I don't think it's too much to ask for nice looking things.

And no, I'm not pretending that the new stadium isn't going to be a million times better than the existing facility. That's not the point.

Having said that, I love the tyndal stone, and the overall design, finishing notwithstanding, is excellent.
This is how it's use is explained by HKS for those that are interested.

"HKS - The middle layer is covered in corrugated metal panels, emphasizing proportions with material manipulations, strategic reveals that pay tribute to Aeolian forms found in the prairies as parallel ridges, furrows, fields and sand dunes."

I'm sure budget considerations played a part as well.

I actually have no problem with the overall look of the exterior for the record..

Lol on the materials rationalization. I'd be more apt to believe it if they said it is a common building material on the Prairies and we are being contextually sensitive.

I think the bottom line here is would Rider fans really have wanted to pay more ticket surcharges for a more attractive exterior? I'm guessing that the answer is no.

Sometimes you have to do what's feasible. This isn't some Olympic venue where a national government just writes a blank cheque, or a situation like in a big US city (or Edmonton, I guess) where local governments are paying for the new venue so the team owners go all out on the design.

I can only imagine what the explanation would be if there were any exposed plywood in the plans... "The plywood is intended to pay homage to the extensive Boreal forests in the North of the province. "
