[Moncton] Northwest/Magnetic Hill Developments

I see there has been activity on a piece of prime land on Mapleton Road. It sits at the corner of Queensway Dr and Mapleton. I walked in to see what they had been doing and there are 2 test wells now drilled there. Has anyone heard of anything/anyone looking at that land (11-13 acres)? Maybe this is just a nice sales perk to have soil conditions already known if someone inquires.

Nope, I don't know anything about it, sorry.

A loooong time ago (6-7 years), a developer was eyeing property there for a major outlet mall, but that file has been dead for years. This is likely unrelated.......

This plot of land is listed at $1.5M for 6 acres. Pricey, but ideally located for a commercial/retail business of some form.

I wonder if we'll ever see Mapleton Road extended all the way to Front Mountain Road......

Wish they would extend it to ammon.. shave at lease 2 mins off my commute . Though economically i dont see how it would benefit the city, to many other spots to grow.

Certainly agree with this. It's just weird how Mapleton transitions from a major 5 lane arterial to a farmer's lane in the space of only a km or so.......

Not that strange since the transition point is basically at the TCH. I'm sure it's very common that a major road effectively ends at the highway, with occasional stub extensions at the other end for future growth. (Look at the TCH interchanges around Oromocto for example)

If anything, it's more weird that Mapleton extends as far past the TCH as it does, and probably bodes well for future growth along that route in the future.

New subdivision under construction off of the south end of Evergreen Drive - Diamond Estates.



In the Spring, the road was only roughed in and none of these houses existed. It's like an instant neighbourhood!

I was talking to an employee of one of the stores in the Valhalla Place strip mall on Mountain Road today.

She says that the NBLC in the plaza will be leaving in the next 1-2 years as apparently they need a larger store. This is hearsay of course, but she seemed to know what she was talking about. Apparently the liquor store is collecting postal code information from patrons and will be using this data to help decide where the new store should be located.

This will be a fairly large blow to Valhalla Place. The NBLC generates a lot of traffic. My source says the meat market next door to the liquor store is particularly worried as a lot of people stopping at the NBLC in the summer would also drop into the meat market for BBQ supplies.

To me, their current location is pretty much ideal as a neighbourhood liquor store. I imagine wherever they relocate, it won't be too far from where they are now. I do agree though that the current store is undersized.

Not sure if it's regular housing or if Habitat had some lots(cause they have used this system) but I've seen Sips panel homes being built in that area (as well insulated if not more then regular stick frame homes) It's as structurally strong, and takes less time since sips panels lock in place instead of building walls.

I thought the manager at NBLC was joking about the potential move but with what you've said it's not.

In my opinion they should build a NBLC store near home hardware and another one perhaps in wheeler park?

As a resident of the North End, I'd like to see a grocery store built near the Home Hardware too.

I'm wondering if that will ever happen. I've seen land for sale back when the Mountain road Home Hardware was first built, and heard something was supposed to be built on either side but din't hear anything about what, and it seems to have stayed quiet for a long time.

Well, Sobeys did own land right next to the Home Hardware at Magnetic Hill with plans to eventually build a new supermarket out there, but I'm pretty sure they have put this land back on the market.

With the NBLC relocating however, and with the propensity of Sobeys and NBLC to co-locate with each other, it's interesting to speculate......

If I'm not mistaken Facing the property they owned the lot at the left of the Home Hardware but not 100% certain.But they could fit the Sobeys NBLC, and something else on that lot, on the right side you could fit a lot more then just Sobeys, and NBLC. tho you could fit a nice Strip mall, and a stand alone Fast food/Coffee Shop.

Just my 2 cents on the subject.

When I went up there a few weeks back the manager told me relocation would be happening and it is simply due to size. They are the only liquor store in the city that doesn't carry the product I buy. I have heard rumors of locating inside Northwest Center next to sobeys but nothing substantiated.

If they would relocate there it would be close to the one located in the Fairlane Bowling building IMO. So I'm wondering if that location would stay as is, join in with the new location, or just disappear.

apparently the YMCA is looking into opening a 2nd location in the north end of moncton. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/ymca-moncton-north-end-1.3288531. Kind of sad that we still doesn't have a High School in the area, but may get a YMCA.
