Liberty Wellsian, the vast majority of residential structures in the city whether multi or single family are framed from wood. Residential structures are only going to be framed in steel when the height becomes so much that utilizing wood framing could not safely accommodate the weight of the structure. The future condition of structures will not hinge simply on the wood framing, it will be the general continued maintenance of the structure as a whole. Driving through the city you can see structures that are 20 years old that look terrible because of poor maintenance from the owner and there are structures that are much, much older that continue to look great.

The Utah Heritage Foundation needs to look into changing its name. For a second there, I thought it was a right-wing think tank.

A little over a decade ago I used to live in the neighborhood of those 4th west apartments(few blocks north and east). I remember the neighborhood being plagued by roaches, termites, and carpenter ants. I remember walking to the 7-11 at night and smashing roaches along the way. They were all over the sidewalks all summer long. One of the places I had out there the carpenter ants destroyed an apple tree. That project made me think of that and wonder whether the city ever got a handle on it.

Those are wood roaches that you see on the sidewalk. They're not the same kind that infest inside people's homes. They're also not light-sensitive, which is why you will see them running around and not hiding.

I had no idea there was such a thing as wood cockroaches. I'm now both sickened and terrified, thanks Stenar.

I grew up in the lower marmalade district... Roaches were a huge problem for everyone. The only person I knew that didn't have them, had their whole home and exterior property sprayed once a month... I've always wanted to move back to the marmalade area, but probably wouldn't because of the roaches... Turn the lights on and watch them scattere. ...

Hehe we had a rule not to buy anything from O.P. Skags, Safeway, and other area stores that wasn't canned or Jared.. Finding roaches in boxed goods from both stores was common place... Eventually Safeway closed, then the Asian market on 300w & 400n, then OPs.... Mini Mart closed this last year... No more Marmalade stores... No more roaches in my cereal ...

Gross.

My biggest two fears are finding roaches in my cereal....or on my pillow when I wake up and first open my eyes in the morning. And as they focus, I see it with its little antena moving back and forth just staring at me like it wants to say "good morning sunshine. You look so beautiful when you sleep."

It's not too late to put the place up on stilts.

This is so weird. I had no idea there was a roach problem. I've lived in 100+ year old house in SLC for 20 years and I've never seen a roach in Utah. I lived in Florida as a kid so I HATE roaches.

some people think box elder bugs are roaches, and vice versa. How many box elders do you get in the fall? 80 W and 300 N is only two blocks away, so I'd imagine the bug situation would be similar (except cleanliness of building tenants goes along way).

Thanks for your reply in advance.

I used to live at 150 E and 1st Ave, which is also only a matter of blocks away, and we used to get some gnarly spiders, but no roaches.

If we spray correctly they're not a big problem but I think in 2013 it rained right after we sprayed or it was timed incorrectly or something and instead of dozens we had thousands, like walking outside across a crunchy carpet.

How soon are we going to hear something about SL County's review of the 3 CCH proposals scheduled for January 14, 2016?

Will the County announce something that day? I'm getting anxious.

We will know shortly after the 14th who the primary is for negotiations.

The others won't be out of it completely because if negotiations break down, they will fall into line.

The order though I don't think will be made public.

Additionally, there is a shorter negotiation period this time around. This is done to limit the loss of the last year as much as possible. The goal is to get this under construction as quickly as possible.

I don't know any timelines as most of that will be determined in the negotiations as well as in the permitting processes.

Maybe this has been discussed, but would the north location, with Abravanel Hall in the way,Be hindered in how effective the hotel would be in adding convention space that connects with the rest?

The space in the hotel would be meeting space not exhibit space. So it wouldn't be hindered.

The north location would also remove a couple of the meeting rooms which would need to be restored. The restored rooms would not be considered part of the new meeting space.

Additionally, if the north lot is selected and the developer that stated 1,200 to 1,600 rooms is selected, the additional meeting space would be between 120,000 and 160,000.

This is because the meeting space is a requirement of the law authorizing the CCH. It is roughly 100' sq ft per room. This is why the early reports were stating 1,000 rooms and 100,000 sq ft of meeting space.

While this isn't exhibit space, this is space that is used during large conventions for exhibits at times but also for break out sessions and other meetings.

The new size not counting the corridor space sq ft will be close to the following:

Exhibit Space: 515,000 sq ft.
Current Meeting Space: 164,000 sq ft.
With a 1,000 room CCH
Meeting Space: 264,000 sq ft.
With a 1,200 to 1,600 room CCH
Meeting Space: 284,000 to 324,000 sq ft.

This puts the Convention Center size between 779,000 sq ft and 839,000 sq ft. Up from the current 679,000 sq ft.

This again doesn't include the corridor spaces, foyers and the like.

This additional space will help keep Outdoor Retailer as well as attract additional conventions and meetings to the area on top of just the CCH.
