Top 12 Tall Building Predictions for 2016

Quote:
Developers Will Diversify Residential Offerings as Global Luxury Markets Saturate
The boom in luxury condominium towers is likely to slow down in 2016 as many of the biggest markets such as London, New York, and Dubai near saturation points. In New York, “Billionaires’ Row” has seen no major new proposals while some under-construction buildings have begun reconfiguring units to create more affordable condos. As the luxury boom slows, expect the rental apartment sector to gain steam with perhaps more emphasis on affordability.

I cant believe someone spent the time to render that ridiculous winged building. That thing is hideous, although I do love the massing if it had less wings and ridiculous 🞵🞵🞵🞵 on it.

Yes. The current supertalls U/C should all be well, since financing is already secured. I think 57th Street is pretty much saturated. I expect one serious supertall proposal by 2016.
As for the city, my guess is we'll hear some major news about 80 South St and the Vanderbilt/Madison Ave corridor.

Indeed, and hopefully Hudson Yards/Brooklyn/Queens/JC projects

My top 10 anticipation list for 2016 (in no particular order):

- Tishman Spire (height/design/...), 1,500'+?
- 666 5th Avenue (by Hadid), 1,400'+?
- Central Park Tower: spire or no spire, final height.
- 80 South St: (by SHoP) final height, design?
- Girasole: construction start
- 2WTC: construction start
- 340 Flatbush Ave: design details, final height.
- the mysterious Shvo CP tower
- 125 G St: design/height details
- 2 MW: tenants, construction start? height?

My prediction is that we will hear about a supertall or two along Fifth.

There are at least three major site assemblages, including one by Extell, along Fifth (plus we have the 920 ft. tower already going up at 520 Fifth). I think Fifth Ave. is about to get a lot more vertical.

I'm thinking we'll hear of fresh proposals for 2-3 supertalls near to and along 57th street (Shvo tower?), 2-3 supertalls in the Upper East Side (BIG mystery tower?), a couple more within the midtown east rezoning area and another couple elsewhere in midtown. We might also get one more new one in the Hudson Yards district too.

We'll get renderings for the Zaha Hadid supertall, the SHoP supertalls, 335 Madison, Tishman Spire, 31 W. 57th and a bunch of other likely or confirmed supertalls I can't recall right now. We're likely get at least one more +1500ft tower confirmed too.

I'm hoping that we can breach the 1776 barrier and that 15 Penn Plaza signs a large tenant within the next 12 months, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Both will happen when the stars are right and we can afford to be patient.

145 East 60th, 340 Flatbush, Tishman Spire, One Park Lane and 335 Madison will likely be in site prep one year from now.

2 WTC, 1 & 2 Manhattan West, 50 Hudson Yards, 3 Hudson Boulevard, One Vanderbilt, 111 W57th and 125 Greenwich street will all be past the foundation phase in December 2016 and we might see more large towers join them yet.

I'd say that this year is the best and most active one of the boom so far, but next year is going to be even better.

Also, two behemoths will go vertical: 30 HY and CPT. I'm so pumped about Nordstrom: the perimeter wall just keeps on climbing ... 1,000', 1,100', 1,200', 1,300', 1,400', 1,500', ... 1,600'? When does it stop? And a spire on top of that would be awesome!

Steinway and Verre on the other hand will take some time to get there.

There's a chance that 3WTC will top out. Under normal circumstances it really should, but you never know with the WTC.

If we count the number of 100m+ and high rises, NYC added a whole Chicago worth of skyscrapers and high rises in the last 10 years. May the boom continue!

Super tall wise, Dubai better watch out. Where coming for the super tall title. 2nd place is not acceptable.

I'm wondering what the population will be come the next census estimates. I have good suspicion that its past 8.6 million.

This would be amazing if true... reading the most recent news though it seems Tishman will be ~1200 and Flatbush more like 1000 although that very well could be/ I hope is subject to change.

As far as height goes we always have Nordstrom so I hope the other at least have amazing designs

Nice list! I would like to see H3 Hardy's proposal for a new Penn Station or something comparable for that area on the list. ...Is Hudson Spire missing or is it what you're calling Tishman Spire?

Yes. Let's hope Tishman will deliver. They certainly got the money and square footage. And no NIMBYs around to complain ...

True, despite the 1200 figure it would really surprise me if they didn't pass the HY North Tower by at least 100+ feet since they can and well, they're Tishman.

Since I'll be away tomorrow I want to wish everyone here a Happy New Year! 2016 looks promising on the supertall front. Many towers will go vertical / start construction.

Cya all in 2016!

Happy New Year's to you too, Hunser!

Great things will come in 2016.

May the towers be taller and the NIMBYs be weaker.
