Rideau Centre Expansion | Completed

I'm really really really impressed with this renovation so far. The mall has pretty low ceiling and narrow corridors, but the bright white gleaming look makes everything feel more spacious. It's very slick (maybe too slick for the feet haha).

Having grown up in a school that required dress shoes in a country where polished marble tile was used almost everywhere and anywhere, I can promise you, one gets used to it. It's like walking outdoors in the winter in Canada Hahaha

Have any of you been into the new LCBO? I'm praying its temporary until the addition opens, because it is WAY too small. The layout is crazy, and if its at all busy, the line snakes from one end of the store to the other, taking up the entire beer aisle making it impossible to browse. Bad store.

Also, Shoppers is really inviting because you enter through the cosmetics section, but once you get into the rest of the store, its actually quite dimly lit. Very odd.

I'm in the wine business and visit LCBO's daily...I have to say, I was expecting a MUCH larger store, I was shocked when I saw it!

New shoppers seems pretty small too (but maybe just irregular layout). Both seem inadequate for role of LRT riders picking stuff up on the way home.

I'm even thinking that this corridor will be inadequate as the mall's main access to the LRT. It's far narrower than the current walkway towards the M-K bridge, and it's obvious how congested that area becomes during rush hour. While there is access to and from the Rideau Street exterior, there will only be one stairway and an escalator (likely going up) from here to the station. There's a lot going on in that space, and with people going on and off the escalators to the second level and turning every which way, people will be bumping into each other in such a tight space.

Ironic, the LCBO will be caught in a bottleneck, and Shopper's Drug Mart is going to suffer from congestion

I noticed the medallion the other night when I was walking by, but at midnight, it was dark and all I had was my iPhone, so the pictures weren't too spectacular and not nice enough to post on my group. Tomorrow I'll probably get a good one.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, Barry and his team along with PCL have done a flawless job making this facade a true piece to be proud of in Ottawa... We throw away toooooo much of our heritage, but to see something this beautiful rise from what was there before is spectacular... Sure, keeping the building as it sat would've been nice, but to see it return to the founder's original vision is super awesome also. It's back to exactly what it was when it opened on that corner in 1907. They're almost complete. The parapet wall is currently being put up on the Rideau St side and from there, all I could see that needs to be complete are 2 pieces of moulding on Nicholas near the back over on of the "ribs" and the actual window panes in the windows which I know were saved. They are thick glazed panes and they need to be installed to complete the facade properly...

SUPER AWESOME

P.S. not to ruin it for anyone, but the medallion is "brand-new"... The original one was junked sometime in the 40s. This one was re-created using old photographs. They did a fine job doing so... The Legacy lives on. In the middle of the medallion are the initials C/O for Charles Ogilvy.

Shepherd's on the third floor (between Kate Spade and Michael Kors, across from Nordstrom/Tiffany) will be closing soon (moving to Train Yards). Seeing as how this area has become a "luxury" zone, I wonder what'll be taking its place.

It is annoying how they make their customers troop through the cosmetics section first in order to get to everything else in any given store. And for those of us with relevant allergies? That's got to be a Pain.

In full agreement; Padolsky and PCL did the best possible job with the limited heritage protection handed by the City. Still would have preferred keeping the original, showcasing the history of Canadian department stores and their evolutions (expansions) over the years.

As for the medallion, quite impressive. I always figured the original was cast-iron though. Surprised to see what appears to be copper.

Their stores have looked tired and out of place for a decade now... long overdue for a revamp.
