on a building this height the crane will likely grow with the core, so it will only be taller than the building's final height for the last few stories.

I read there was to be 9 floors of parking. I work in the area and check it out everyday at lunch. The staircase is at 10 stories and the blasting has gone at least 2 more levels beyond that. So they are at approx. 12 levels down so far.

Each complete switchback on the staircase is approximately one floor, I was there this week and I estimated they are around 7 floors deep give or take.

I'm assuming they just dig their way down... and as to getting out, I asked the same question in post 729 in this thread... and the next couple of posts give a good answer...

They were drilling until 10:15pm last night. Does that mean they are behind schedule already? Is there a rush to get to a certain stage before winter sets in?

Well, it finally happened. This hole is now so deep that the scooper (or whatever the real name for the massive back-hoe is) at ground level can't reach the bottom. So another scooper at the bottom is "feeding" the one above -- in other words each scoop now takes about twice as long to reach the waiting dump truck. Looks like a delicate, and time consuming, task.

Couldn't they use a type of vertical conveyor belt system to remove all of that crushed stone from that deep hole? Seems like a more logical choice.

Well, it's certainly less time-efficient than using a single excavator, but they are too deep for that now. On the other hand, it's waaay more cost-efficient than some other methods they could use, such as bucketing it out by helicopter, for instance. It comes down to a cost-benefit analysis.

What they are doing is using any means available to clear the spot for the tower crane base. Once they have that they can dispense with the multiple excavators and just use one to fill a bin lifted out by the crane to finish off excavation. In other words, they are close to done going down and will shortly start the process of going up.
