Claridge said last year that it would take them 4 years to build: all of 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018, with occupancy in late 2018 or early 2019. Construction on the tower itself is not supposed to start until early 2017... it's all below-grade work until then.

P4 seems like a bit of a stretch.

And I do have to ask how they get those backhoes out of there?? I'm assuming a "bigger" type crane.. but they just seem kind of bulky and heavy...

And where does all this excavated rock go? I presume either held for some future landfill project, with possibly the larger rocks being sold to landscaping companies.

Bigger crane for sure. What they will do is remove the arms (or booms) and then lift out the body and tracks as one unit. They will use the type of crane that shows up with about 8 tractor trailer trucks in tow carrying the counter weights and other parts.

That rock goes to a quarry usually owned by the same company that is trucking away the fill to be crushed into gravel for road projects.

Does that not seem incredibly dangerous having an excavator lean that far down to pick up rocks?

Hole is getting big for sure. It will be awesome to see it fill in with garage and mechanical floors, and eventually rise above grade...

It's not leaning into the hole, it's sitting on solid ground. Excavators are designed to have safe lifting capacities at various arm extensions, on a chart usually stuck inside the cab. This identifies whether the weight restriction is based on tipping over, or hydraulic force. With the arm that long, as long as the bucket is kelp close to the base, the limit would likely be the hydraulic force available long before the machine came close to tipping. Even if the operator managed to lift the back track off the ground, they likely have the skill to stabilize the machine well before it has any risk of falling in.

I've watched them scoop large boulders out of that massive hole and it's an impressive sight. As interesting as all this is, I'm more looking forward to seeing a 45-storey crane there!

Agreed... A couple of days ago, I sat behind it and watched it fill a couple of dump trucks. I can confirm the "back end" is more than firmly on then ground.

Man that is one big honkin' hole though... can't wait for the cranes too!!

The crane will probably push 50. It always makes me sad thinking about how the building is shorter than the crane.
