It does look like hydro corridors come to think of it. I'm just not used to seeing those in such a central location, but having the power generation so close by is a somewhat unique situation I suppose.

Indeed! Canada's cities have really turned a corner in the past ten years, they seem so much more 'finished' than they did 20 years ago. The new urban boom we've been experiencing has really given us a plethora of lively towns across every region, at least from my recent experience in Central Canada and BC.

The Beltline is really filling out these days. The contrast between when I visited this past summer and the last time - back in 2002 - was striking.
Still, Calgary really needs to improve the streetscaping and public realm in this area. The area has urbanized and populated, but the sidewalks still maintain a low-rent, peripheral character.
Things like 13th Ave. and Memorial Park are very well done, but that should be the standard, and not the exception.
It looks good here. In fact, this is by far the best view of le 1000. In fact, this is the only angle le 1000 looks good in.

That said, according to the last poll I did about Montreal skyscrapers, I noticed two tendencies about Le 1000 : You love it alot, or hate it alot. Never in the middle.

Absolutely. Even cities like Moose Jaw, Banff, etc are seeing a (relative) ton of investment in their downtown areas.
