In the 80/90s customers moved away from department stores because they tried to be everything to everyone and instead start to look to speciality stores.

Today customers are moving away from the dollar stores because they try to be everything to everyone and instead start to look to speciality stores.

When the one or two rows of party stuff in the dollar store just does not cut it for selection you can make a special trip to one of these.

I find it kind of sad that discussions on a Construction Thread for a city the size of Saskatoon has been relegated to talking about party stores versus dollar stores....I guess the downturn in the economy IS really taking its toll on Saskatoon. There has been no "news worthy" announcements for ages...

New Stonebridge business park 'tremendous' news: mayor

Despite high commercial vacancy rates and the ongoing need to invest in Saskatoon’s downtown core, a massive new business park going up in Stonebridge is “absolutely tremendous” news for the city, says Mayor Don Atchison.

“If you ask me the question, ‘Should the City of Saskatoon be building buildings like this?’ the answer would be absolutely not,” Atchison told reporters Thursday. “But if it’s a private investor who wants to invest millions of dollars of their own funds into our community, why would we say no?”

North Prairie Developments Ltd. began work on Cornerstone Commons — a four-building, 184,000 square foot complex featuring mixed retail and office space — this summer. The first units are expected to be leased in spring, with work on the final building slated to begin in 2017.

Can't fault mayor Atchison for not having unfettered enthusiasm for any and all things new (except of course for those things that could reduce dependence on private vehicles).

why....why do these things happen in this city? i get the cost of downtown....but come on, we have 5-7 good major projects , theyre going to have to repaint the signs for them soon. with this circle south will now be even worse. Not saying we need the perimiter but im so so on that, a different solution is needed quick. with the 6 years ive lived here im starting to feel really cramped. i live near stonebridge, i cant even imagine how busy that area will be once this is done.

It all comes down to dollars & cents. North Prairie is building their Stonebridge suburban office building for approximately $100/sqft less than a downtown office tower would cost. That means significantly lower rent and significantly higher occupancy. It's really a no brainer.

North Prairie is creating employment and wealth in Saskatoon and I find it reprehensible that someone would refer to that company as a plague. Jigglysquishy, how much of your money have you invested in the development of Saskatoon?

And, you're not a development company. If you were, I would have much more faith in you to provide "innovative, quality homes" as their mission states than themselves.

This kills me. You can still allow for private investors who want to invest millions of dollars into the community with a vision, standards, and a bit of a backbone.

On what do you base that comment?

Tax deferral for a set period of time? The same type of tax break that most new developments receive? The same type of tax relief that most businesses opening up in a new city will receive?

If North Prairie is receiving some preferential treatment regarding tax breaks, please share.

When I lived in Saskatoon I bought a North Prairie built townhome. Some interaction with them during construction. I think they have been good for Saskatoon. There build a variety of housing projects generally a good mix between lower end and high ends of the market.

After several decades of no real new office space going into downtown they the first to build an office building and they did it on spec. There were several that came later. The building that houses BHP is pretty nice and it was a risk that few other developers were willing to take at the time.
