Hey guys, here is an article written by one of my classmates that lived and worked in Saskatoon this past year. It's a look into the value (or lack of value) that is seen in the city's structures and asks us to question the approaches we take to our built history.

Agreement finalized for new Saskatoon bridge project

SASKATOON – A financial agreement has been reached for Saskatoon’s largest construction venture. The city announced Wednesday it has finalized a project agreement with Graham Commuter Partners for the North Commuter Parkway and the Traffic Bridge project.

The project will cost a total of $497.5-million over a 33 year span covering construction for the first three years followed by a 30-year operation and maintenance agreement with the city retaining ownership throughout the contract period.

The federal and provincial governments are chipping in $116-million towards the project.

Even before he jumped on board to open a dedicated poutine restaurant, the potato dominated Jason Evanochko’s life.

“When I was a kid my nickname was Spud because I loved potatoes so much and that’s all I would ever eat,” he says.

He got his start peeling taters in the navy, and admits it wasn’t a glamorous introduction into the culinary scene. But now that he’s about to open a Smoke’s Poutinerie franchise in downtown Saskatoon, his time is completely devoted to poutine — that quintessential Quebec dish of french fries topped with gravy and smothered in cheese curds.

Along with co-owner Darryl Finch, Evanochko hopes the new restaurant, which will be open until 3 a.m. on weekends, will become a go-to destination for Saskatoon’s nightlife scene.

This is excellent. It's also quite accurate. I've never lived anywhere where the city council and developers despised their own city's heritage structures quite so much. It's astounding. As far as I can tell, the city's ideal vision of Saskatoon is a massive mile-wide parking lot bisected by freeways and surrounded by a ring of ever-expanding suburbs.

Why do they want to run this city if they hate it so much?

The Optimist Club of Saskatoon has been given the green light to raise funds to build a winter recreation park on Diefenbaker Hill.

City council unanimously approved the group’s fundraising plan today. The Optimist Club of Saskatoon plans to offer big donors the naming rights to different aspects of the park, such as the chalet, snow tube run, snowboard park and magic carpet lift.

Sorry my mistake I believe it is Party City - it is an American store for birthdays, weddings anything that party supplies would be required.

That sounds about right. The Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton is due to have construction finished in summer of 2016 and isn't scheduled to open until late 2017 or early 2018.

The opening is delayed, but not that delayed. It used to be Fall 2016, now it's bumped to early 2017 (source).

Until the next delay is announced, that is.

They've gone to the city for more money, but I think council is starting to run out of patience. I thought someone posted that article a while back.
