Don't know if this was mentioned, but the new Sportschek officially opens November 12.

Apparently IKEA Canada has made a new expansion announcement. They plan to open an additional twelve new showroom stores in Canada by 2025. This is in addition to the 20 or so new "pick up point" locations that they announced earlier this year.

This is a direct quotation from the article:

Now, unless IKEA is under the same misapprehension as some other businesses and thinks that Quebec City constitutes the "east coast", this would appear to mean that there will soon be a return of this retailer to the Maritimes.

What does this mean for us? I would expect that there is now a strong likelihood of a showroom store in Halifax. As for Moncton, I think the chances of at least a pick-up point location has taken a significant step forward. I don't imagine we would be seriously considered for a showroom store unless IKEA moves towards smaller format showroom stores. This apparently is a possibility as this is another direct quote from the article:

If IKEA were to consider, say, a 100,000 sq ft showroom store, I could see that as being appropriate for Moncton. In any event, there appear to be some interesting possibilities opening up as far as this iconic retailer is concerned........

One of our new forumers did mention recently that he had heard that IKEA had expressed interest in land on Harrisville Blvd. There's enough land out there for a smaller format showroom store. Hmmmmmm.......

I think it's the St Laurent's River that messes them up.

But on a serious note there where rumors that they where looking to build a smaller format store off Harrisville Blvd. Near the Kent store... But it's all Rumors still at this point.

It would be soo cool to have a IKEA in Moncton but I am thinking the most logical spot that they could put it would be on Mapleton on Lady Alda and that could spearhead more development there.

But on Mapleton i am encouraged with all the development there over the years but i think there could be more that could be done.

I was thinking next to the Best Buy on Plaza but then realized it would only be large enough for a small multi tenant strip. So I do agree with you the Mapleton might be the better way to go on this one. I think the rumors about it being off Harrisville Blvd came from the way everyone was talking about that area expanding in what would have been considered a few years but it seems it was but a dream that the Harrisville Blvd/Shediac Rd area would have been as developed if not more then Mapleton, Plaza, and Trinity.

IF Sobeys and Wal Mart would have built new stores at Harrisville there a few years back and that spot would have been the perfect area. I think that now that Sobeys is still undecided on when they will start work on the new location in Dieppe is quite stressing. I bet the folks at CF Champlain are probably anxious to see when they will do the move to move out of there to fill it up with another retailer. I think now with Bass Pro, Cabela's and DSW have put Moncton on the retail map and I hope more regional chains decide to call Moncton home.

I hope that we will see a Factory outlet development in town such as Premium Factory Outlets or even Tagner Outlet.

But definitely I will be checking out the new Sprts Chek on Friday and I certainly hope that its much better organized than the CF Champlain Location that does need some work done in it.

I would say that ecko unlimited's days at Champlain Place are numbered.

The store has only been in the mall for a year, and has always had a "temporary" feel about it. In the most recent Champlain Place floor plan, they show the ecko space as being vacant.

International Clothiers also has a going out of business sign up. I wonder what other stores will bite the dust at the mall after the Christmas shopping season?

There are always several stores at the mall each year that close after Christmas. The difference this year over previous years is that the spaces remained vacant all year long, and remain unfilled. For a mall that typically has 98-100% occupancy, this is a bit of a worrying trend........

That's what I have been saying for the past few months on this board. I am concerned on the amount of empty storefronts in the mall. The part that puzzles me with that I was under the impression that Cadillac Fairview had a waiting list of retailers that wanted to set up shop here in the Greater Moncton area. Could one thing that are scaring potential tenants could it be the amount that they charge for the lease itself.

I hope that this is not a sign that CF Fairview could be in trouble. But you guys know my wishlist when it comes to retailers in Moncton but i don't think that they are interested in setting up shop here.

But while the mall is under-performing there are some other areas in town that is booming.

Whatever problems Champlain Place is having now has little to do with the mall itself, and is more related to the general decline of the enclosed shopping centre concept in North America. Most garden variety shopping malls are in serious trouble, with the only survivors being those malls which have moved upscale. This is something that Champlain Place has done with reasonably good success (Coach being the only exception).

In terms of it's competitor shopping centres, Champlain Place is actually quite healthy. Both MicMac and HSC in Halifax have considerably more vacancies than Champlain Place (MicMac in general seems somewhat stressed).

even with the impending demise of International Clothiers and ecko unlimited, there will still only be about a half dozen vacancies at Champlain Place. That's only a 3-4% vacancy rate, and as such should not imply any form of impending catastrophe.

I do get the impression that the "good old days" of having a line-up of retailers waiting for space at the mall has disappeared. I think that most retailers interested in a mall like Champlain are probably looking for a larger footprint (like Forever 21), and as such, existing vacancies would not suit their needs. Smaller boutique type stores now typically are very high end, and generally only interested in the top 10-12 markets in the country. Champlain Place therefore might have to do some tweaking to further reinvent itself.

I still think there is a value in Cadillac Fairview thinking about further expanding Champlain Place. If Sobeys does move out, then a major expansion on the west end of the mall would allow for some larger format retailers (like Forever 21) to move in. Some of the smaller format boutique retailers elsewhere in the mall might relocate to this new section which in turn would allow for consolidation of retail space elsewhere in the mall. This could "right size" the retail spaces in the mall to make them more attractive to interested retailers out there.

In short, I am not concerned about the future of Champlain Place. Cadillac Fairview just has to come up with a plan in order to maximize the potential of the mall.

Well, that's much better than a downright closure of the business. I know Jungle Jim's is on the lower end of the scale of eating establishments, but their burgers aren't bad and I have a soft spot for the place. Glad to hear that the closure is only temporary.

The new building going up next to Dollarama on main street near Atlantic Super store seems to be fairly large, if it to be a restaurant its going to be a large one....I'm guessing we are looking at a multi tenant building.

Continuing with the development around main street Atlantic superstore, I've noticed where they are building the Giant Tiger that they have created an additional unit which will have its own front entry (as seen in the pic) I peaked inside the opening and noticed that there is no access inside this unit to the rest of the building so more retail?? also the unit near the restrooms that was empty for so long is under construction as office space.

It's nice to know it's finally being renovated, and used after so long. Unless you count temporary uses. I noticed the extra set of door by the new Giant Tiger as well I wonder what it will be.

Now that you say that I'm a little curious to the nature of the going to ask for permission to add a drive thru. I am aware that there are certain rules you must follow in other to have a "legal" drive thru.

The first one I can only assume is the new Canadian Tire store.
The second, and third one I'm not to sure I may have seen post about but without pictures.
It seems all the city construction projects have mashed into 1 in my brain.

On a separate note I had seen construction photo's on one of those prefab building sites, and it made me think of the the old buildings at the S/W corner of St George, and King St(4 St George, and the old APM building)Harris St, and if they where to redevelop that area. I don't think the city would go into/alow such a massive redevelopment project with such a small population. The building had 2 floor plans one with Downtown styled shops (20+/- foot wide storefronts), and one with larger ones. Both with 9 floors above containing over 200 residential units of varying sizes.

#1 - New Canadian Tire at Northwest Centre
#2 - Ultramar/Convenience Store/Country Style Donuts at Mapleton Crossing
#3 - Irving/Circle K/Tim Horton's at Plaza 1909

Also:

The new Sport Chek at the Northwest Centre did in fact open today. Nice store. Surprisingly busy, but there were 25% savings storewide for the grand opening. The store is well laid out with clothing in the centre, sports equipment on two side walls and shoes on the third wall. The store seems light on sports equipment and heavy on clothing and shoes compared to the other location at Champlain Place......

Isn't there a Circle K and Irving across the street and a Tim's a stone's throw away?

Or am I thinking of another Plaza 1909?

According to the T&T, Jungle Jim's will be reopening will be in January, with both a completely new look and new ownership. Apparently the Mountain Road location will be the first in Atlantic Canada to be renovated in this manner.
