Don't forget. China has a one airline one route policy for long haul destinations. I guarantee you if it weren't for that, you would have seen HU on PEK-YVR or PVG-YVR years ago.

Probably would have also seen Air China out of YYZ over YUL.
Good for Calgary for getting this route, but I'd be surprised if it lasts very long. I'm generously giving it 5 years. Either that or AC pull out of NRT.

Should be different demographics though, does anyone know if people actually connect to mainland China/India out of Japan?

Thank you for your valuable input. You may now go back to the YVR thread...

On a sidenote, why is it that any time a route is announced to YEG/YYC, as opposed to the other Canadian gateways, out-of-province'rs come here to chime in about the route's eventual demise? Bizarre.

Wow that is fantastic. And this thread finally wakes up again!

Usually when the CAAC announces an airline route application publicly it's a good sign the route will actually be approved.

Usually they also announce frequency as well so if someone can read Chinese and find the CAAC announcement (in Chinese) please let us know.

Edit: just saw it in the article 4 x weekly.

No, thank you for taking it personally.
If you haven't noticed, international carriers seem to have a hard time making YYC work long term, and this seems like a pretty ambitious route. So, I'm not praying for its eventual demise, but I'm just being realistic.

Only as far back as 2012, the O&D market from China to Calgary was about 46,000. I doubt it's ballooned substantially since then. And since YYC isn't really a major connecting hub, O&D alone may not be large enough or high yielding enough to sustain the route. If BA is struggling at YYC when the O&D market alone is 6.5 times bigger, then this route is already looking bleak out of the gate. And before somebody brings up KLM, the big difference is that AMS is a MAJOR connecting hub for the Calgary market onward to other European destinations whereas I don't see PEK as a major hub for the Calgary market and onward connections to Southeast Asia. .

And for the record, I don't reside on the YVR thread...

It looks liek you have all the info. You should write a letter to Hainan explaining the situation before they go ahead with this route and make a big mistake.

Wow, very sensitive people on this thread. Wouldn't be the first time in history an airline might not be able to make a route work, and it's not specific to Calgary. Everyone's so excited about the announcement, they refuse to consider some basic facts.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who thinks this will be a difficult route for Hainan to sustain.

Good news about PEK, would like to see a few more big announcements coinciding with the opening of the new terminal. Would love to have a direct Dubai connection:

Emirates airline is recruiting pilots in Calgary as it continues to seek government approval for direct flights between Dubai and Calgary.

Don McWilliam, country manager for Emirates in Canada, said the Calgary recruitment effort is part of a program the company has around the world.

“We are in Canada, not only from a pilot perspective but a flight attendants’ perspective, many times throughout the year looking for potential candidates to come to Dubai,” said McWilliam, a former Calgarian now based in Toronto.

Emirates employs 746 Canadians, including 200 pilots, said McWilliam. The airline, which counts 147 destinations, has more than 65,000 employees. The airline has three non-stop flights a week from Toronto to Dubai.

Open pilot recruitment days will be held Sunday and Monday at the Delta Calgary Airport Hotel.

“Emirates’ position is quite public and has been for some time. Everybody knows our position in terms of not just Calgary but all of Canada. We would like to see increased capacity into Canada from the UAE (United Arab Emirates),” said McWilliam. “But currently, and previously, those decisions really lay in the hands of the government officials with the Canadian government as well as the UAE.

“Of course, Calgary is a destination that we have quite clearly stated that we’re very interested in.”

The Emirates recruiting for flight crew in YYC has absolutely nothing to do with them wanting to serve YYC.

I was being sarcastic. The airline industry in general is tough, and long haul routes like that are tough. We all know that. Just let us enjoy the moment Debbie.

Good news for YYC. I would have preferred YYC - HKG, but this will still be good.

I have my doubts as well. HU isn't as big in PEK as CA, and they only interline with WS, so they are limited with onward feed at YYC. It will definately be tougher for them compared to AC/CA.

Timing on the route will be key.

As for the demand, a guy on airliners said O&D on PEK-YYC is 25,000.

That is indeed a pretty low figure for a new long haul route. Just to compare, PEK-YUL is almost twice that, and as I said, with AC/CA's joint venture and hub access at each end, is a much easier route to pull off than HU on PEK-YYC. The dreamliner will definately come in handy on this route, as they will need to penny pinch as much as they can, especially with the current economic climate of Alberta. Plus with the "one route one airline'" policy, HU might want to hold onto YYC, if for nothing else to keep CA out of the market.

That being said, HU definately has a track record of failed long haul routes. BUD, DXB, CAI, IST, LAD, ZRH are just a few. Some of those, the reasons are evident, some aren't.

Hey man, we are taking hug risks here. Diving into shark infested waters and swimming against the current !

Plus sometimes, we look shit hot when we get it right !

Besides, who are you fooling, you're skeptical yourself...

Hey if all of that doesn't work out, it still depends on how much and how long YYC decides to pay Hainan

Demand might be less than YUL, but you can't base everything off of that figure. You have to assume that they are trying to get traffic from other sites, YEG, YQR, etc.. also a direct flight there might change things. Is it guaranteed to be a success? Of course not, no new route ever is, and everyone here knows that. Regardless of your negative analysis and predictions for 5 years down the road, it doesn't matter, the route is coming and it's a good day for YYC. Suck on that long and hard.

And not so hot if you don't get it right. Anyone can make predictions, they're cheap and take all of three seconds to do so.

part of the risk and reward ! Nothing wrong with that.

And speaking for myself, i assure you that before I talk, i do my due diligence. So it's not a statement that is blasted out in a few seconds of heated debate. There is a lit bit more that goes into it ! Sometimes we get it right, sometimes no. But debates such as these are the whole point of these forums. If everyone is always on the same side of things and doesn't raise questions about an issue, then just read the press releases of all these routes and stop there. If you want to have a discussion and hear everyone's arguments for/against something, then stick around. You might learn a thing or two !

it's also why, as cyeg66 put it, an "out of province"-er such as myself is on this forum. I like to stay informed. You know....the whole..."keep your friends close, and your enemies even closer..." !

That's not my prediction, btw, nor is it a negative analysis. What i said is all factual.
