The revised proposal for Fort McMurray's Golden Buffalo... apparently the development permit is submitted, if I'm reading their website correctly. The old proposal had the main tower at 107 meters. Looks more in the 80 meter range now. Still substantial and remarkable for a city of Fort Macs size.

I still find this one to look bulky and dated. It feels very office park 1990 to me. Maybe it's just the scale of it.

^ Yeah, it looks a bit more squat now. Lopping 20-odd metres off the top will certainly have that effect. Still, it's quite an impressive proposal and not a bad looking project at all.

Is it still likely to go ahead given the dramatic drop in oil prices, though? It seems like something that was a result of three-digit oil price fever...

^looks like 🞵🞵🞵🞵. I think the architect did well in considering context in the design details.

It's not like oil prices are going to stay down. Projects keep starting in Calgary despite a small recession in the municipality, same with Edmonton. I doubt this will go through until recovery, but it could still happen after that. It always seemed a bit pie in the sky to me, but with the size reduction it actually seems possible. Fort Mac is typically in need of office, hotel, retail, and medical office space, and this development provides pretty much all of that. To build it now so it's online during the next boom would actually be the smartest decision in my uninformed opinion

Some variation of this project has existed for the past decade. Edinburgh Condo was capped at the height of a housing shortage. Fort Mac has grown/matured but, I don't think it's at the point to attract established developers and investors. Be very surprised to see this break ground.

Here's a proposal for Young and Windsor in Halifax. It's outside of downtown, in a former industrial area:

Quebec's Parliement building will undergo a $60M expansion shortly. As underscored by the rendering, the expansion will be mostly underground and will have almost no impact on the appearance of the building. Most of the new space will serve to accomodate the 120 000 tourists who visit the Parliement each year and to enhance the overall security. Two additional conference rooms will also be built to accomodate the parliamentarians.

Place des Peuples in front of the Canadian Museum of Civilization (or the recent, Harparized name Canadian Museum of History) in Hull, Québec. Same architect as the museum, Douglas Cardinal. NEUF contributed to the towers.

Original Proposal:

http://old.brigil.com/en/communities/97-place-des-peuples-6177-laurier.html

New kitch design with podium adopting the exact same design as the museum. Typical for one trick pony Cardinal. Don't get me wrong, the museum is an architectural masterpiece, top 10 buildings in the Ottawa region, but don't build an identical structure across the street 30 years later.

I much prefer the original one. The second one just looks like a couple of giant hunting knives. Why would somebody want to live in a giant knife?
