Sightlines from the A-50 to the Parliament won't be affected. Neither will it affect the sightlines from the A-5 at the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge. It might affect them coming in from the north on the A-5. Not sure...

It isnt so much that Gatineau needs these towers, Gatineau just needs to replace the — thats there. The houses may have some form of historical value but their are run-down and ugly. Concievably anything could be built here, so long as the buildings are attractive and hide that hideous neighbourhood behind it.

I also wouldnt consider this part of the parliamentary precinct since it is accross a large expanse of river and you cant really walk straight to parliament. It is a different section, and theoretically is, distance wise, it is equivalent to a building on Somerset, so it isnt too close.

Brigil has a sign and a closed sales trailer on an empty lot on Parkdale as well since last year, but nothing happening so far.

That area of Gatineau isn't really that bad and the houses on the streets behind the project are reasonably nice.

It's been demonstrated that we interact differently in "human scale" environments than we do in automotive scale environments. Likewise with massive skyscrapers. We become perceptually isolated from each other.

Hull's community life has been the subject of massive erosion since the advent of the Portage complex, this is yet another project that further promotes this problem rather than attempt to solve it.

The city's plan (or I should say Action Gatineau's idea) was to try and funnel the tourist traffic heading in the museum towards the core. Desjardins' project does nothing to help change this. You can argue that it's a positive thing if tourists stick around in Gatineau for yet another "attraction" (which is really only offering a view of the neighbouring attraction), but it won't lead to travellers spending further time in the areas we're currently trying to redevelop. Instead, they're just going to cross the road before they hop back into their buses and you know it.

You want to generate an interest into the entire core and further if possible, not just the museum area.

Brigil probably is too ambitious, many of their big projects are stalled or going nowhere. We talk about the project on Saint-Joseph, but other projects going nowhere includes Petrie's Landing as well as a major development project near the Alonzo Wright Bridge which there is nothing except the sales centers since an eternity. Just to name a few.

Petrie's Landing (it's a multi-phase project with regular housing currently being built) is progressing fine, I reckon. Any skyscraper project they have seem to be moving slowly, however.

Notable stalled projects: The Columbia, Champlain/Lucerne, Lepine.

All three of these have been announced for ages but none have broken ground yet.

Lepine's project is right next to an existing development.

Didn't thought the spokesperson of the promotor of this project is none other than the first mayor of the amalgamated city as well as long-time mayor of the old city of Hull.

The councillor for the district which this project is proposed is also targeted with an ethics complaint as she was seen in a Brigil promotional video for this project. This complaint was launch by a group of four citizens including the one who was the recipient of the Shawinigan Handshake.

Both articles are in French however

Things are no better on the Quebec side of the river.

The neighborhood resident association is opposed to anything that will put Gatineau on the map. NIMBY!!!

Its a shame for the twin city of the nation's capital. Its surprising that we still don't have horses and buggy's.

A hand full of militants (one very very well known), have been able to gather a few hundred supporters and elected a new board of directors in June to officially take down the Brigil project. IMO, they should move to Buckingham, Angers or Masson which are more rural neighborhoods of Gatineau.

This association (ARIH) has been opposing any kind of development that will densify the population of the Island of Hull.

Brigil unveils revised $400M Gatineau condo-hotel project

Paula McCooey, Ottawa Citizen
Published on: November 12, 2015 | Last Updated: November 12, 2015 10:18 PM EST

When architect Douglas Cardinal designed the Canadian Museum of History three decades ago, he envisioned a highrise community that would someday become an extension of the tourist destination.

Now Cardinal gets to realize that dream, having been commissioned to help redesign Brigil’s ambitious mixed-use condo hotel Place-des-Peuples, along with Neuf architects, that will link to the museum underground and transform the community into a hub for residents and the million-plus visitors the museum draws each year.

“I looked at the whole museum as a piece of sculpture because I felt that I would want in the future people looking over and enjoying the museum and seeing this view,” said Cardinal, who also designed the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health and has been a vocal opponent of Windmill Development’s Zibi community project. “I always pictured a highrise, for people to live in this particular area.”

The contemporary LEED project is a bold complex with two connected glass towers — one 35 storeys and the other 55 — that will include 320 five-star hotel rooms, 420 condominium units, and 55,000 square feet of commercial space for restaurants, cafés, galleries and boutiques. LEED is the acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

The $400-million project was officially unveiled at the 30th anniversary gala at the Canadian Museum of History on Thursday evening. It will be built directly behind the museum and include a glass elevator that will take museum visitors to an observation deck with a 360 degree view of Ottawa-Gatineau.

Brigil, which started out building homes in 1985, has graduated to condo towers on both sides of the Ottawa River, including the proposed 121 Parkdale north of Wellington Street, a the 32-storey luxury condo that blends brick and curved glass, and, like Place-des-Peuples, is still in the planning stage.

Brigil unveiled the project this past spring and made some modifications after listening to public feedback.

Cardinal and the highriseam made a brief presentation to the media on Thursday at 61 Rue Laurier, the current presentation centre and future site the development.

Frederic Lewis, Brigil general manager, said the project would bring the city $8 million dollars in tax revenue per year. He said the modifications included incorporating more glass and less concrete to reflect light, incorporated a podium-style design to ensure the base was in line with surrounding homes and buildings, and incorporate a gathering space the area sorely needs.

“It will create the life that we are missing in Gatineau,” says Lewis, who expects the project will take three to four years to complete. ” When you walk outside, let’s say at 6 p.m., the city is quite dead, you don’t see any action. So we are following the city objective to get 10,000 people over 10 years (to move into the core).

“We have to create density and that’s what we’re doing.”

Horrendous. This would be really bad if built. I did not like the original proposal but this is worse, much worse.

I can't decide if I love 'em or hate 'em!

They're certainly world-class, and inspiring, but are they a little too much for the location?

Or, should we look at this in another light and say that this is what ALL architecture in the national capital region should aspire to be?

Hmmmmm..........

Looks like something they would build in Dubai, with very sterile street presence. Reminds me of a tacky table top sculpture. If they are going to do this I don't understand why they don't just buy the rest of the block, imagine this thing looming over some poor guy's backyard. Way too much Douglas Cardinal in one spot, hire another architect!

This redesign is hilariously awful!

If it was unlikely to get done before, it's CERTAINLY not going to make friends now!

BRIGIL: taking tacky to new heights
