How in the hell is the Status quo killing Salt Lake City?

Main street is thriving, housing is thriving, commercial office space is maxed out, with more under construction and more in planning, A new theater is nearing completion, billboards in the city have come down (one thus far), Eat-a-burger is gone with new development occurring there. Regent St is on it's way to being a legitimate street, mid block connections are being made, the city is multi-modal, the Farmers Market is nearly year round, Central 9th is developing. We are close to having a new developer stepping up for a CCH. North Temple is starting to see a little bit of life (yes slow, but it's starting), a new net zero energy airport is under construction, we have a new net zero public safety building, we have new libraries, an active restaurant and night life scene.

Sounds pretty 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 to me.

In general, I support term limits and I think 12 years in a single office is a long time and in many cases too long. New government officers often arrive with fresh ideas and bold sense of enthusiasm and positivity. Having said that I do not think that the candidates that stepped up to the plate this election, other than the incumbent, demonstrated how they would be able to continue the positive momentum that this city is currently experiencing. I will have to wait and see and hopefully be proven wrong if Jackie becomes the 35th Mayor of SLC.

I also think it should be mentioned that one person cannot perfect or destroy a city. The Mayor often gets credit for every positive element of a city but is also chastised for anything negative that occurs when often the Mayor had little to do with the situation. We will have 2 new City Council members representing the downtown area and Glendale/Poplar Grove. I'm looking forward to hearing their vision for their respective council districts.

Development of RWP not for SP space pretty much ends any major addition of expo square footage and the SP is pretty much as large as it's going to get. Remember, I am talking about contiguous expo space, not meeting rooms.
When I hear there is someone is wanting to develop RWP or the Fidelity lot, that would not be related to conventions, I am disappointed. Because something like this, in my opinion, is what should happen:

Ok, I think we get it, you're an angry pleb overturning the apple cart. As much as Murica is full speed populist right now on both rides of the coin, there is a plus and a negative to having established statesmen (stateswomen). Someone like Becker hangs out with Obama and does high profile things for our city and we magically get grants for things like a streetcar in an era of no pork spending in congress. I know this is a novel idea for the angry people of this country who feel things in their gut, but electing politicians is like hiring a lawyer, a contractor, a doctor, etc; you want someone who is good at being a politician, someone who is advocating for the city and who knows how to ethically grease the wheels. Can someone stay in too long and burn out? Sure.

This idea that we need to move politicians out as soon as possible is like a Koch Brothers 🞵🞵🞵 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 where paid for ideas and favors endure longer than people trying to change the system. Look at what happened with Reagan and the billboards... People need to really see that there is a dark side to short term candidates, they can just as easily be kamikaze shills for plutocrats. The freedom caucus in the house will someday be studied in political science classes when we learn how disposable candidates further empowered big money over communities. But hey lets stay positive; Jackie says things are gonna change because she's better friends with the developers...

Agreed. I wouldn't support any development on RWP that isn't CCH or convention center related.

Utahns get really bent out of shape over politicians going to D.C. or other trips out of town. Hello, this is one of the most important things our mayor can do for the city. Also, sitting in his office 365, 24/7 is not required to effectively run a city.

Exactly! Remember when we Deedee Corradini was doing the same stuff in DC as Becker and we got all that money for TRAX and the Olympics (granted, it maybe wasn't all ethical when it came to greasing the Olympics wheels but I forgive her )? Our city has some silly voters. That's about as nice as I can put it.

Corradini wasn't involved with the Olympic bribery stuff at all. She wasn't involved in the day-to-day running of the bid. She was just a figurehead for the city who would go to some of the IOC meetings.

She had a different scandal and it was a witch hunt, but had nothing to do with the Olympics.

Here you go, it's not a very clear photo because of my dirty windows, but it gives you a good idea on what it looks like as of 05/Nov/2015 3:38 pm.

And the crown will cover/obscure all that, right?

Walked around Regent Street and went the the parking garage to see how the EPAC looks. I really like how it's turning out! They have done a great job at not creating a "back" of the building and the storefront glass at street level looks very engaging! Can't wait to see how the whole street turns out!

Also, when down there, I was thinking it would be a great idea to have some of the New Year's festivities on that street. A fair amount of people can fit and it could be in addition to the Delta Center (Is that where the New Year's Party is currently??)

EVE is one of my favorite things in Salt Lake City. It is usually freezing cold, but there is nothing like ringing in the new year with a few thousand Salt Lake peeps. It used to be held in the Galivan Center before it out grew the space. Now it is held in the the Salt Palace. It is pretty cool since now there are tons of indoor elements too, but the main venue where everyone gathers to count down to midnight is still outside on the southern plaza.

I think it would be pretty rad to bring it back to the Galivan Center and expand it north into Regent Street. I'm not sure what the public facilities will look like in the EPAC itself, but it could see it getting to be a part of EVE too. I think that is a pretty rad idea.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I walked past it the other day. It's very engaging from Regent street with balconies facing the street and engaging glass walls. Looking forward to it!

111 isn't a skyline changer but it sure will be a nice addition and gap filler in our skyline and the overall density of not only the skyline but the city in general. It will bring 100's of additional people into downtown on a daily basis, which will result in more foot traffic, supporting the existing retail establishments in the area, and it's sure to bump of the daily Trax and FrontRunner Ridership numbers up as well.

While yes it would have been nice for it to be taller and make a greater impact on the skyline, the benefit that I have preached over and over, of it being the height it is, is that it will be occupied sooner which will result in a new building being built sooner. I'm talking to you 151 S. 151 South will do even more for the overall skyline, IMO, it will help to stretch the skyline east, and continue to add density at the street level in another area of downtown.
