That would be my stand as well. Clear all of the warehouse buildings on the property, do whatever you'd like with that land, but leave the 1915 tower alone.

I wonder how big the freight elevator is in that tower? Big enough to fit a full-sized vehicle? Imagine how epic of a car showroom that building could be. Each floor could be assigned to a different car make.

Floor 1: Salesmen/Reception/Financing
Floor 2: Chrysler
Floor 3: Hyundai
Floor 4: Acura
Floor 5: BMW

... and so on.

Then have all the cars for sale located on the lot spanning the rest of the property.

Practical? Probably not. Just daydreaming.

I was thinking the exact same thing....car dealerships are always renting space out at evraz place to show cars in climate controlled space in the winter.

also convert it for social housing and use the inner areas of the floor plates for daycare / recreational activities.
Just because leveling and building new is the most economic doesn't mean alternative uses are uneconomic.
Anyway, Lots of ideas from the guy with no $. It would be a terrible loss to see it go. We will never see a building with that massing and character again. But I would rather see it demolished than have it sit vacant and neglected like the travellers building on Broad (aka pigeon palace)

Namerind unveiled artists' renders, but it sound like the final design is nor finished. Current building at 1840 Lorne should be demolished this month.

In recent years, City Council has shown little regard for maintaining the protection of heritage buildings. I wouldn't be surprised to see this go - despite this being a pretty significant loss.

I think it is likely that the building will stay up, as well as the other buildings within the Warehouse District. I think the idea of demolishing such an iconic building will be the straw that breaks the camel's back, and will cause the citizens to protest.

Besides, the building is frickin huge, there are literally hundreds of uses for it that will potentially bring profits to the new owner.

Here's the thing you are all forgetting. The main building is around 350,000 square feet. 43,000 square feet per floor. It would probably cost $125 or more per square foot to turn the thing into condos which would end up long and narrow due to the floor plates. So to make your dream come true it's going to cost somewhere around $40 million to renovate.

Then remember that the condo market is in the tank and the the economy is winding down. Who do you think is really going to step forward for a project of this scale in Regina at this point in time? This building has been available for purchase for some time now and now developer has rushed to do anything like this. Don't you think that says something?

Yes the building is a great building but you also have to be realistic about things. Do you really think it's fair to hold buildings hostage? Do you really think that the taxpayer should have to take this building on when it's abandoned and left to ruins? Far too many people think the development game is easy.

All that said, this might be the one time that a building on the Heritage Holding list gets put on the protected list against the owner's wishes.

The University of Regina is mulling the possibility of another new building on campus, this time a three-level dining hall with a new bookstore, the nursing faculty and rental spaces attached.

The tender, released Thursday, envisions a place where students can grab a bite to eat and a new textbook, which will also “create a home to amalgamate and house the entire nursing faculty” and “grow the high demand of the ESL (English as a Second Language) program.”

Goodale said he’ll continue work on a few projects like the Canadian Police Research Centre, which was announced as coming to Regina, “but never seemed to come to fruition”

Hopefully Gooddale can make this happen. 12 Conservative MP's couldn't seem to make it happen but I suspect Gooddale will be more effective for getting results for Regina then they were.

I thought a purpose behind the addition/renovation to the building at 11th & Broad was to accommodate Defence Research and Development Canada's requirements... they never moved in, I take it?

Maybe he's just got the name & size of the "centre" mixed up... the CPRC and 2 other DRDC programs were rolled together into the Canadian Safety and Security Program in 2012 (the CPRC was announced for Regina in 2007). They have budget of $43 million - but that doesn't mean the money's staying here, it will be allocated nationally. There were to be 8 jobs associated with the entity: most responsible for assessing & administering the funding.

Not that I was a big fan of the Sask Con caucus since they spent $0 on our new stadium but plenty on the stadium in Hamilton, but... they did tool up for the 6 arena Cooperators Centre and the new International Trade Centre at Evraz as well as millions towards the waste water project. I'd give them a pass... C+.

I would imagine that if they expand in Saskatchewan, which is doubtful at best, they'd put a store in Saskatoon.

I'm setting my expectations low and hoping for a distribution center where you can order IKEA stuff online and then pick it up locally without having to pay shipping charges. That would be just as good as a full-service store in my books (minus the awesome $1 frozen yogurt cones and $2 pizza).
