The Mount Stephen Hotel's blank wall really stand out does it...

^ You mean that grey thing with the diamond pattern? I'm sure it won't be that visible once the rest of the surface parking lot it was built on is developed.

Nothing, not even rumours. It's surprising considering they are building the new mega Holt-Renfrew/Ogilvy/Hotel/Condo project just in front of it, so that lot will be the only one remaining in the whole Museum neighbourhood, a prime piece of real estate if there ever was one.

Yorkville's skyline is a beast. It can almost go toe-to-toe with the south-skyline's of Yonge-Dundas and the Financial District. Crazy height as well, the only problem really is that it doesn't have any large-floorplate towers like Scotiaplaza or FCP. One Bloor and the Four Seasons tall as they are don't have the same one-for-one impact as Aura but in combination they are definitely a match for the southern intersection.

Casa 2 will add another peak to that picture in another month or two. And Casa 3 will add some bulk. Then there will be a gap in 180 meter plus development in Yorkville as we wait at least 2 to 3 years for 188 meter One Yorkville to make an impact on the skyline and hopefully The One - 319 meters will be well under construction by then. I'm pretty sure there are no large towers other than that U/C in Yorkville right now. Lots of density building smaller towers are and will be U/C still, I have no doubt.

Church Street is a developers fantasy, look at all that lowrise junk which is primed to be demolished. And the land is valuable-close to subways and streetcars in the heart of downtown. I can see that a lot of the taller projects in Toronto will migrate to Church once developing land on Yonge becomes cost prohibitive. There are a few projects underway on Church, but nothing like what is happening on Yonge Street. Just a matter of time, I figure.

This sort of Shanghai-eating-Pittsburgh aesthetic could be a real precursor to North American cities maybe 50 years from now. Toronto could be a bellwether town.

I'd go more with Shanghai eating LA myself. (The old bank tower core of Toronto is about as steep as LA's main skyline, and they've both got lots of nodes.)

I'm more upset with the Vogue Hotel next door. I can't believe a 5-star hotel could be allowed to look like a grotesque 70's high school, with its kitschy green/pink roof and ugly brickwork.

I believe it used to be the regional HQ for some oil company (Sunoco?)

I'm so glad they kept MLG. It looks like a giant time capsule from the Toronto of old, sitting there amidst the cosmopolitan hustle and bustle.

To be fair, Yorkville has largely lacked any sort of signature tower until now (CIBC and Manulife could be anywhere and only urban buffs would recognize them). I also doubt any young person today (lets say people born in the mid-late '90s) would recognize MLG at all.
