Wasn't there talk that it was one of the biggest in the world after Soho in terms of foot traffic/patrons? Obviously Soho is massive, and probably no one district anywhere else compares (except maybe one of those well-known districts in Tokyo?), but I seem to recall civic boosters or club-going douches somewhere on the internets talking up Toronto's "clubland."

Though I've also heard that it has quietened down a lot. I myself don't mind the area and the vibe during the daytime, but you'd never catch me anywhere that the words "bottle service" are used after dark.

Not anymore... It has shifted to the southern end of "clubland" King West of Spadina) and is a bit more upscale. The old clubs are basically all gone..

The Entertainment District (former clubland area) is more pubs/bars/sportsbbars/restos/theatres-movies/live-performance/ than acutal dance clubs now.. There are still a few, but not like the olden days. The place is still jammed packed with people, till early morning though.

Nightclubs in suburban downtowns and bars along West Queen West have picked up some of the slack, though as Caltrane mentioned, King St West has grabbed much of the upscale action.

The ED is still quite busy at night, although nowhere near it's heyday. A lot less vomit though. One big positive is that it has actually turned into a destination during the day. The number of new restaurants, bars and other various retail outlets is huge. The clubs really provided nothing during the day except blank walls and blacked out windows.

I do understand people that lament the loss due to amount of fun it was for certain groups, but I doubt there are any specific set of criteria that would allow for the rise of such large spaces in a concentrated area for a long time. There's lots of people in Toronto that like to blame Adam Vaughan and condo development at killing clubland, but at the end of the day there was a shift in the preference of entertainment. It happens.
