The immediate threat to two downtown heritage arts buildings has been removed, but city officials say preserving the buildings in perpetuity won’t be cheap.

Restoring the Graphic Arts Building and Mitchell and Reed Auction House, best known for housing the ARTery, would cost an estimated $2.7 million, plus the costs associated with the loss of the land.

The city originally intended to tear down the buildings, use the site for temporary storage during LRT construction, then sell it to a highrise developer to further redevelopment in The Quarters. Now city officials say they’ve found an alternate site for construction storage.

The city Wednesday released an assessment on the condition of the buildings...

Also of interest: Note that there is no actual exterior wall being constructed on the west side of the site. I imagine it's because the parkade will be extended into the Greyhound site development, including underneath 103 St. If so, that is going to be one massive contiguous parking structure.

I don't know if it's the angle or the lack of landscaping, but those look pretty awful...

Just came back from a month and a half in eastern and Northern Europe. I sure hope Blachford water feature can achieve at least some kind of resemblance to the wonderfulness that is the waterways of Europe. Copenhagen and Oslo specifically had some pretty stellar waterfront architecture. Would be amazing to have a bit of waterfront cafe culture paired with modern interesting architecture here in Edmonton.

Also, looks like they're getting ready to start the new parking system? I've noticed it on 99ave but are they launching it through all of downtown all at once?

A combination of growing health demands and crumbling infrastructure has Alberta Health Services planning for a massive $4.5-billion overhaul of the Royal Alexandra Hospital campus.

A proposed site plan obtained by the Journal shows a project so big and complex it would need to be done in four phases over 16 years. It would involve up to 20 buildings.

Highlights include the construction of an 800-bed highrise, a stand-alone child mental health building, and new facilities for the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and CapitalCare Norwood.

Several older facilities, many dating to the 1950s and ’60s, would be demolished to make room at the crowded inner-city health campus. Should it proceed, the initiative would likely be the largest and most expensive health care project in Alberta’s history...

1: District Utility Plant
To provide the extra power required by new buildings. Some of the space would be equipped immediately, while the rest would be phased in as buildings are completed.
2: Child mental health building
The construction of the stand-alone building would create approximately 100 beds. Current services are housed in the old Children’s Pavilion.
3: Clinical services centre
Construction of new Clinical Services Centre to host programs currently run from building set to be demolished.
4: Demolition
Demolition of the old Women’s Centre (1951), Children’s Pavilion (1964), Community Services Centre (195 and Renal Dialysis Building (2003).
Phase 2: $2.27 Billion (estimated cost)

5 and 6: District Utility Plant, parkade
Further development of the District Utility Plant. Construction of the new parkade will be made on the north side of campus.
7: Hospital towers
Construction of a new highrise hospital tower with approximately 800 beds. The building would include 64 extra rehabilitation beds for use until new facilities at the Glenrose Hospital are complete.
8: Treatment centre
Renovation of the existing Active Treatment Centre and Diagnostic Centre to accommodate uses, such as offices, training facilities, research labs and low-intensity care spaces.
9: North Pavilion demolished
Demolition of the North Pavilion (1964) at CapitalCare Norwood.
Phases 3 and 4: $1.79 Billion (estimated cost)

10: Revamping of Glenrose Hospital
The final phases of the campus overhaul would feature upgrades to the Glenrose Hospital, including the demolition of GlenEast (1964), renovation of the GlenWest building (1990), construction of a new GlenSouth building, and a new parking structure.
11: Final projects
Other projects include renovation of the Orthopedic Surgery Centre, further renovations of the old Active Treatment Centre, and demolition of Anderson Hall (1968) .
