But that was some of the coolness of the renderings, lower in the building had less windows and as you moved up more and more and a the top pretty much solid glass! I know it would be nice to have a bit more light in some of the lower units, but design wise on the exterior that is part of the attraction!

I said it before and I'll say it again. I thought they were using two shades of glass to achieve this effect, not glass and metal. I thought this was going to be sexy as hell, but it's looking more like it's going to be imposing and foreboding. I wonder if apartments higher up actually get more windows, or if it's going to be glass covering metal.
Has anyone else noticed the highly visible silver mechanical units behind the perforated metal panels? It's especially noticeable from the Burnside Bridge. I find it is very distracting visually...

I was thinking the same thing about the glass, I was just surprised by that and feel sorry for the lack of window space the people in the lower units will have.
As for the presence of the building, I am loving the shape of it is taking on at the east end of the Burnside Bridge. It will really create a good start to a very striking east side skyline.
I agree with many here. The skin is not working on this building. Nothing is breaking up the mass as the glass and metal are not different enough. I have a feeling the building next to it going up is going to be the real winner. Beautiful glass going up with some distinct features that breakup areas of the building. I have to ask with those views how could the yards not provide balconies? Im not sure if its a design trend to keep "clean line" bs, but the lack of balconies on new PDX buildings is really noticeable compared to other booming cities. How about a bit of outdoor living? The PDX building architecture trends are very insular, closing off the world around them. Is this based on cost or just clean line design trends? Sad that we are not taking advantage of amazing environment we live in and building little closed castles.

It'll be interesting to see how it looks when it reaches full height and becomes mostly glass. Will the glass at the top pull the eyes upward enough to distract from the gloomy lower floors? Or will the base somehow accomplish this? I hope so, because this sure looks gloomy to me.

I live right by this so I see it's progress on a daily basis and for awhile there I was getting worried about the facade failing to show any meaningful transition towards it's more glassy half but now it seems like it's finally starting to look glassier.
I wonder where exactly the affordable units in this building will go. If they're on the lower floors with less windows I think that's pretty cruel.
Maybe my eyes are horrible, but it's always looked more navy/purple than brown to me. I understand the idea behind staggering the glazing like that. Probably an idea I would've come up with as well in studio.
So far, it is truly horrible. When I point it out to friends, we call it 'The Prison'.
I don't know how many floors are left to go, but unless this thing shapes up quickly, it's going to be a horror show every anyone goes over the burnside bridge.
I understand what the expectations were, but the renderings clearly show metal paneling between windows. The overall concept of fewer windows at the bottom and more toward the top is an interesting solution to the problem of dealing with living on a highly trafficked, highly visible thoroughfare. I'll reserve final judgment until it's complete, but overall, I like how it's turning out, even if the effect could have been achieved a bit more gracefully.

It's dope. It looks very similar to renderings. (Windows aren't always going to reflect pure white.) Me thinks you're being dramatic. $5 you eat your words.
Well, I'll add my voice to the chorus saying that it looks pretty close to renders posted on page 1 of this thread. The biggest difference I see is that the window transoms are a lot heavier than shown in the renders (they were probably illustrated unrealistically thin).

It's not terrible, but it's just not great. The lack of glass makes it a drab structure, almost institutional like. A lot more Glass could have made that corner vibrant with light.
Pretty safe to say this tower has been a dud for a lot of people I'm noticing. I think when that area gets sorta more filled in with more towers this building will blend in much better. I think the lack of such size towers of this magnitude kind of makes it stand out a little too much.
I personally think it looks good and cool with its stealth look. Maybe when phase two of the 19 story tower is completed it will grow on folks more
The brown doesn't look as shitty (literally) in the renderings, it's like a richer darker brown. The brown on the finished product looks like feces. I don't know. Even in the renderings, my eyes are drawn towards the glass at the top. The glass isn't filling up enough of the building yet to really make an impact.
