I'm going to start hosting quarterly events next year. I am made some great connections since I launched SL City News and I can promise that if you are a fan of this forum and my site then you will enjoy the events. Events will be free to members of SL City News. Membership is only $35 for a year. The more members there are the bigger and better the events will be. Events will focus around engaging urban spaces in different ways and include networking events and guest speakers. If you are interested in becoming a member follow the link and select the membership perk.

Some renderings of Prana. Not the best drawings I know but they moved fast as they switched their focus mid-stream to townhomes. Lotus has a diverse inventory (although still small to medium compared to the Cowboys of the world) but they are focused like a laser on true urban infill townhome rental product right now. See: Blue Koi. Only group I know of doing it here.

They have a 32 unit project that has broken ground in Pleasant Grove plus about five other similar projects in the horn in the metro area. Full disclosure: I've done some consulting for them, though not on Prana.

Yeah, too bad about the DoPo. Great idea (similar to Yoshi's in the bay area),
but not surprising. To me, it's not a REAL city unless you can sustain a Live Jazz venue. I know, that may be a strange barometer, and there's a lot of other ways to gauge, but it seems that that kind of place tries and ultimately fails in about a year or so here.
Did you know that Salt Lake actually had a Club Blue Note on Main and about 820 south in the early 80's? I saw Wille Hutch there.
There's a Denver forumer that has a caption reading " Cool, Denver has reached puberty", and I'm thinking " Cool, SLC has reached pre-pubessence.
Anyway, yeah, good catch for the Gateway, and like many have said, it would be cool to have it gravitate toward the entertainment and night life end.
Ummm… We DO have live jazz…

Every tuesday night at the Gallivan plaza, they have a live Jazz band. Usually its the "Wasatch Jazz Project" performing, but they have multiple other groups as well. There is almost always a very large crowd, with free dance lessons during breaks on the dance floor.

Jazz is my thing, and this is a quality jazz venue. These guys are professionals and ex-professors from around the country.

I think they'll be a good fit to the Central Ninth neighborhood.

Utah doesn't have a deep relationship with jazz. It's even more the case with places like Phoenix which was largely a post jazz city. I'm guilty of having checklists for what makes a major city, but sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. We didn't have a lot of talented black people here at the turn of the century because we didn't have many black people. What we do have and did have was a much larger performing arts scene with theatre, dance, orchestras, singers, etc. Utah has always punched above its weight in performing arts, but jazz isn't in our blood. The Big Band era certainly took hold here like it did in much of america, but not really jazz.

In many ways our city is prepubescent and in many ways it's established beyond its years, like a child prodigy. What you have to give the SLC metro credit for is beating the odds against many mid sized American Cities and making globalism its —. If we look at factors like cost of living, income inequality, racial segregation by neighborhoods, there's a reason why the blues isn't in our blood... Because it turns out people with shittier living standards make better music.
Well spoken.

Yes, we do have live jazz.
Some venues have once a week jazz, including Gallivan, which is actually on Thursdays, and coincidentally and ironically has Joe McQueen tonight.
96 year old brother from Ogden.
The Gam foundation and Mr. Hanks has the jazz series from fall to spring, just about monthly (quality names usually),
but I'm talking about a year round, 24/7 Jazz Club.
And can we have a moment of silence for the death of KUER jazz nightly, with host Steve Williams, (and a few capable others), going off the air after 30 something years. I know some folks who know the programming director up there, and they were pressured to get a more "commercial" program instead. Drumroll......it's now mostly talk radio.

Sorry Orlando, for generalizing about your tastes. Of course, in the end, that's what it comes down to, is we all have our different tastes.

Salt Lake City is the only major US metro of over 1 million that does not have a jazz station. Some cities actually have multiple, all day Jazz stations. And yes, we do need a 24/7 jazz club, VERY badly.

Also it is on tuesdays. I go every week.

The last picture looks like one of those Hilton Home2 Suite hotels. Not my favorite design for a hotel, it kind of looks like an older college dorm building and these are getting built everywhere.

Had the opportunity to tour the Hope Lodge yesterday. It will be a great addition for those traveling long distances for cancer treatments. The main atrium/living room is quite nice. I really enjoyed the architecture, just wish that so much stuff didn't get value engineered out of the project! Either way though, it's a great little space with an even better goal.
