Nonsense.
I thought that one of the major problems facing the Saddledome is the low ceiling. Due to the unorthodox shape of the roof, it is unable to accommodate the extensive rigging for larger concerts. As a result, some of the biggest tours of the year will schedule two shows Edmonton and bypass Calgary altogether. If this is true, then Rogers Place will only further imperil the Saddledome's viability as a music venue.

Not that I'm endorsing CalgaryNEXT, mind you. I'm just saying that the case for a brand new arena is there, I just think it should be paid for with private money.

Oh, really? Maybe at the same cost as replacing them! And that still wouldn't solve the issue of the Saddledome's roof unable to support most major concert set ups.

I realize most people on this site would probably want more fucking pedestrian river bridges 300 meters apart from one another... but I say build em' now!

The saddledome as is has another 2 decades left in it before the conversation shifts from "a want" to "a need" for a new arena. Calgary is playing keeping up with the jonses right now. I don't blame them however, I wouldn't be in favor of provincial funds directed towards it.

It's crazy we sit here debating the viability of an arena built in the early 80s, An era where premium seating/suites wasn't Incorporated into designs. And in Atlanta right now the hawks ownership is claiming 16 year old Phillips arena is in dyer need of replacement.

Yeah what's with Atlanta?

Georgia Dome (NFL) opened in 1992, being replaced.
Turner Field (MLB) opened in 1997, being replaced.
Phillips Arena (NBA) opened in 1999 talks about it being replaced so more than likely will be.

Ode to Mosaic Stadium
Java Post Production

A 30 second video created as a salute to the current Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan. This commercial ends by giving viewers a teasing glimpse at an image of the NEW Mosaic Stadium, which is currently under construction nearby and is scheduled to open in 2017.

^ Nicely done. The dark lighting sure makes it look better than it does in real life doesn't it, lol. They almost make it sound like it's Yankee Stadium or the Montreal Forum!

COPPS is only turning 30 now? Too bad they can't just build a new one and tear that beast down.

Its in a pretty good location. There isn't enough money to tear it down and build a new one, unless of course an NHL team comes which isn't likely.

Some people want the city to build a 6000 to 9000 seat arena downtown or by the waterfront as it is all the city needs for OHL/AHL. However this would mean the city loses out on big name concert acts(which it has been getting more of since global spectrum took over operations of the arena) and major sporting events. And of course it will still cost $100 million plus demo costs of Copps.

"NHL-Calibre" arena? Oh Hamilton, you are a glutton for punishment aren't you?

Though I will say that after 30 years, FirstOntario Centre could certainly do with some sprucing up., With all the new arenas being built, the standard has gone up, and Hamilton needs to think about how it's going to compete with other markets going forward. When Balsillie proposed a renovation (in 2007) the price tag was $150 million. I would expect that to be over $200M now, but still cheaper that the 400-500M needed to replace it.

The inside of FirstOntario Centre was renovated pretty nicely a few years ago. New seats, concessions, scoreboard and ribbon screens. For 30 years old, the arena still has a pretty modern and fresh look, certainly more than enough for OHL/AHL hockey and concert events. The exterior is in major need of a facelift however, something it has never received over the course of it's life. All FirstOntario did was replace the signage and repaint the ugly white sidings.

The whole NHL thing is a pointless pipedream as long as there are teams in Buffalo and Toronto (which of course, there willl always be). Not a single dollar of public money should be spent pursuing it.

The only remote shot Hamilton has is trying to scoop up the Coyotes or Panthers.

Hamilton City Council needs to move on. It's embarrassing.

Even if by some miracle a team moved to the city, what are the chances it would ever be successful on the ice? The Leafs can't even make the playoffs for God's sake!

They replaced all the lower bowl seats but have yet to replace the upper bowl seats as they havent been used half as much as the original lower bowl seats.

The city puts in a couple million dollars in upkeep every year so they should be budgeting to replace the upper bowl seats within the next few years.

And ya the exterior definately needs a remodel but that is cosmetic and not in the cities budget as they are only interested in putting in money for necessary expenses like hvac, ice plant, roof replacement, seat replacement etc.

Global spectrum spent money on the ribbon boards and upgrading the concourse. So maybe they throw some dollars at the exterior.

What a stupid post! Actually the dumbest post ive ever read WTF do the leafs have to do with the success of a team in Hamilton or any other market for that matter? Honestly though, don't avoid this question. I want to read the moronic theory you have on this

On another note

If Hamilton dumps 300M into copps over building a new 380M arena (with the aim to pull an NHL team) that city should go down as the worst decision making city in Canada next to Vancouver (fast ferrys,Telus park revenue loss is hard to beat). Hamilton should build a more luxurious 14-15k seat MTS centre for 250M expandable for NHL if needed. It would suite the needs of Hamilton perfectly. or just fix up copps to suite the current needs and act as a temp home for the NHL and build a new arena when the time comes. Let's be honest though. Hamilton could build a Ferrari model new arena and it probably would put them securely under Kansas slightly over milwaukee in the run for a Team. They probably had a better chance 30 years ago than they do now even if a team was available. But if they think that patching up that dump is gonna land them a team they are on crack. What a joke that city is. They have one of the worst eyes for sporting facilities possible. THF's design and location is proof but this just solidifies it. Awesomesauce you should think about running for city council you would slide right in.

How in the hell would Hamilton build a new state of the art arena for $380 million? Not a hope in hell of even being close to that.

Your not building MTS Centre in Ontario in 2015 for $250 million, it would cost at minimum $300 mio. Hamilton is kinds hand toed. its a wise investment for have a large arena in that city as counter to the ACC in the region for events. It would likely break even if modernized, but if it's going to cost $100 mio to nuke it and its in a good location then I see no issue with renovations. If you dump big and smart money into the facility you will get another 15-20 years out of it.

As far as the NHL Hamilton is pushing it (not Toronto, to close to Niagara Region that Buffalo will claim). MLSE won't let another franchise in and if a 2nd Toronto team does get in it will be suburban. If Winnipeg didn't have a legacy play, no way in hell it would have a team. Hamilton had NHL ambitions in the 80s, as did Saskatoon and other small cities. You see the NHL musing Vegas and Seattle and that is the size and scope they want, Quebec will get its team but it isn't on the radar on the league (its the mistress but not the wife).
