Construction of Place Bell (Laval) began about one year ago. Quite impressive!

So the premium seats shift a few yards to the north. Not a big deal. The turf end zones aren't a problem either. The NFL has dealt with worse for years. Quirky frankenstadiums aren't new or unique. They're pretty common in Europe.

Based on earlier concepts of a 25,000 seat stadium for the Argos, it looks like the off centre concept is a compromise that allows for the south side stands to be kept for football and raise capacity to 28,000. It does seem silly to shrink the endzones though.

One again I have to point out that those earlier concepts are outdated and no longer feasible.

The original plan was to have retractable seating on both sides, and then scale them back for football games. That was the intended idea but as I have said many times over this is no longer doable as the new concourse is in place on the south end, and the physical re-reinforcements already in place.

This is why you see the new awkward rendering of the off-center field as its the only way to fit a football field in... with turf endzones......

The only relevant plan put forward is the the rendering FrankieFlowerpot and myself have posted which is what MLSE has drafted and presented to the Ex Place board. We will likely see final tuned plans in a few weeks but it is based off this...

About Oakland...

Sure Oakland stadium is a dump but I never mind the dirt infield thing, its a unique quirk and football isn't life or death when you play on some dirt. Any kid in Canada knows the experience playing football on crappy sod, it only gets bad when the ground starts getting cold and hard around this time.

You don't hear NFL players complain about Oakland's field. Being in California they can still maintain some decent grass even with the dirt for a few weeks. You hear NFL players trash Denver, Pittsburgh, as the worst fields in the league as the grasses at both those stadiums are crap. Foxboro had those issues for a while until Brady complained after a swamp game to Kraft and they rolled turf on the field as soon as they could.

Is this from anywhere official or your own interpretation? One would think that would have designed the concourse with football in mind, given that they were in talks with the Argos at the time. Looking at both the original expansion plans and the new plan, the concourse looks like it's in the same location in both.

Pay close attention to the London NFL game today as the NFL has piggy backed on many technologies the CFL has been trying to perfect.

1. Visual on screen branding:
This was used for the endzones and both the JETS and DOLPHINS script were only painted with minimal white lines and then filled in with colour by CBS. This actually turned out not bad and you did not really notice it aside from a few glitches with the lines and then orange for the Dolphins logo accent.

2. Digital board sideline wrap:
This might be the NFL musing the idea of having wraparounds for branding like soccer and the CFL use.

The quality difference is astounding as the CFL DOES NOT use the same quality of board used in European soccer. Next to zero glare of these boards with a crisp and bold branding visual that was easy to see.

The NFL has essentially done a much better job with these technology and shows the viability of them for the CFL. The CFL just needs to invest the money into the best technology and it can easily create a unique branding model for the league.

YES. IT IS OFFICIAL.

That rendering I posted is from June 2015, nothing else public is more recent and the article you posted to is from March 2015 with outdated information.

MLSE had thier own tight timelines to meet for the Leafs 100th and were not going to sit around waiting for the Argos to twiddle thumbs. The Argos (I.e. ownership.. Braley) took too long and missed being incorporated into the initial plans, and if Bell didn't step in they would of been too late for the next phase which would of closed in the north end.

Not sure how much the NFL had to do with it - those video boards are in use for soccer and rugby games at Wembley.

Montreal's AHL team, either the White Caps moving from St. John's or otherwise.

Blainville is staying put where they are and, if anything, the Q is looking for a team for eastern Montreal (Longueuil etc.).

This is the first year they used the full wraparound.

They used them last year, only partially, and years prior they took them out before the game.

It may of well come down to Wembely having to host a match ASAP and wanting little changes done to it as possible (reason for the minimal paint and lines on the field). But it is a fact that the NFL widely used it when they have always had a policy of having as little or none 'overt' advertising on the field of play. In years past they always took them out, but slowly they have started to use them more. If anything London is a test experiment for things they don't want to try in America yet .

It would not be a stretch to see a banner in the Pro Bowl, and then maybe in the Super Bowl.

My take is that it shows the potential when used to its full potential which is something CFL has not done yet. BC Place, since it has the boards raised up, has it the best as you can see them always during game.

Source? Of course the rendering I showed is outdated, that was my point. The concourse appears to be in the same location in both the old rendering and the new one.

A tale of two cities: Comparison between Edmonton's Rogers Place and proposed Calgary arena development

As Edmonton’s downtown arena takes shape following years of wrangling, Calgary is looking to create a new home for its own sports teams.

While the total cost of the CalgaryNext project outlined in August could be twice as much as Rogers Place, many of the arguments are the same heard in Edmonton.

Supporters say Calgary’s current facilities are outdated and can’t be properly upgraded, the development would revitalize surrounding property and using government money would boost future tax revenue while building a new fieldhouse the city needs.

Opponents call it corporate welfare, saying redevelopment in the area isn’t guaranteed and four of Canada’s NHL arenas were put up entirely with private funds.

The Ice Caps will move to Laval in 2017 (their contract in St. John's expires then). The Place Bell will be an AHL-ready arena (10,000 seats) and Geoff Molson's entertainment company (Evenko) is financing it.

Basically, this is 1+1=2.

I believe it'll work (AHL in Laval) because it's the Habs' farm team and the arena will be accessible by Metro (makes it a lot easier for Montrealers to come). I know I'll go watch a couple games.

While they are out-dated, they can be upgraded.

agreed. I think saddledome is equal or better than rexall, And rexall while maybe not being able to generate the full potential revenue available in today's NHL Would have been suitable to the oilers for another 2 decades to come with a significant renovation. The saddledome as is has another 2 decades left in it before the conversation shifts from "a want" to "a need" for a new arena. Calgary is playing keeping up with the jonses right now. I don't blame them however, I wouldn't be in favor of provincial funds directed towards it.

It's crazy we sit here debating the viability of an arena built in the early 80s, An era where premium seating/suites wasn't Incorporated into designs. And in Atlanta right now the hawks ownership is claiming 16 year old Phillips arena is in dyer need of replacement.
