Some images from the
Bass Pro Shops grand opening at Champlain Place this evening:
There are some interesting similarities between
BPS and
Cabela's:
- both have impressive entries with large stone fireplaces, comfy sofas and impressive taxidermy
- both have separate entries and exits.
- both have a signature feature on the inside (BPS - Hopewell Rocks and aquarium, Cabela's - simulated mountain with taxidermy
- Both have impressive hunting and fishing sections with a surprisingly large archery section.
BPS has an edge in certain areas.
- a larger store there doesn't feel quite as claustrophobic - the aisles are much wider.
- a much larger clothing section.
- boating and ATV sections which Cabela's does not have.
- more gifts, soft goods and camping selections.
Cabela's has it's own edge in a couple of areas.
- an impressive optics and hunting knife section.
- fudge shop
- bargain cave.
Overall, BPS is more impressive, but that's not surprising. Cabela's is a quality store too, but smaller and more cramped. It will be a bit of a struggle for Cabela's I think in this market, but I firmly believe that there will be synergy with having both stores here, hopefully leading to cost competitiveness.
Just out of interest, I decided to drive to Cabela's after finishing at BPS, and the Cabela's parking lot was slightly less than half full. I didn't think this was too bad given that their competition had just opened up across town.
