Vancouver's skyline is Jekyll and Hyde. Some shots are really appealing and suggest terrific urbanity, like this one:

While others portray a 🞵🞵🞵🞵-ugly pin cushion effect, like this one:

I think it's amusing that the white stadium there is a simulacrum in relative miniature of the skyline effect as a whole. It's such a shame that the great majority of the residential towers are so spaced out like that. Regardless of the perceived quality of life for people who live in them, when you take a step back you realize that it makes the skyline look hideous.

He's notoriously anti-Vancouver for some silly reason, even though I remember him saying he's only been here once, 20 years ago.

but he's posting two entirely different parts of the city, and comparing them. The first shot is of the cbd, the densest part of the city. The second shot is of the west end the older part of the city and false creek. It really makes no sense on any sort of level, in my opinion.

If this forum is all about celebrating the urban form, then why does it always descend into petty city bashing? All cities are beautiful

LOL! Always good for amusement when you attempt to venture outside your Toronto/Montreal/Quebec knowledge range.

Yeah, Vancouver is a pin cushion. That's one of it's best features. It's not like Ottawa where most of the buildings are hidden from every angle. Anyone who likes highrises should prefer the Vancouver build so you can actually see the buildings.

Vancouver users are so used to perfection that they lose their minds when they hear something negative. Calm down guys...

I have said this before and I will say it again: we are thin-skinned and weird.

Why can we not make distinctly negative aesthetic comments about cities without it being implied that we have personal problems?

Not everybody likes everything.

What if someone thinks: "Montreal looks like a photo of Baltimore from the cover of a 1970s Social Studies textbook"?

Does it follow that this person is a 🞵🞵🞵🞵, or ignorant, or has something wrong with them?

What if "Copenhagen looks like an array of undersized starchitecture scattered about a second-tier German town?"

Is it my civic duty to insult this person?

Positivity is not a duty. It isn't even universally interesting.

Some criticism is good, I agree, but rousseau is notoriously anti-Vancouver (or anti western Canada in general) on this thread, so it this is more to do with who is saying it than what is being said (and what is being said is quite silly IMO to start with).

Although only about 10% of that is actually skyline. Most of it is low and mid rise buildings better described "cityscape". Not that there's anything wrong with that of course. It certainly has depth, density and character like you said.

Canada's top 3 cities sure have matured lately. There was a time just ten years ago when you could pick out obvious weaknesses but now they're just so damn close to perfect. We just need to continue to invest in transit and national integration and we'll have one heck of a country. Switzerland? Norway? Singapore? Who the f*ck are they?

With Toronto already in the process of electrifying the regional rail, Montreal already planning rapid transit to the West Island and South Shore and just completed commuter rail to Montreal Nord and Eastern suburbs, and Vancouver already having the most rapid transit for its population in NA and still expanding, seems like we're well on our way!

The "yang" in having such a large country geographically..National integration would cost a fortune..
