I do wonder, the rigs that bore the holes prior to excavating, I don't recall the drilling element being 7 storeys high or am I wrong? I used to think they would have to come back to site midway into the dig to install more shoring piles. The case of Place 10, the pit was staggered in such that this was necessary after P1 or P2. Can these rigs really bore in 7 or more stories deep in one go? Its quite impressive indeed.

I think for any ideas of what this tower will look like, I refer to the one being built in NY, the windows and cladding being used there will gauge what Telus Sky will look like, and as for the LEDs I think this project will not use cheap shit strips made from here or China but high quality long lasting all weather durable types that are from Scandinavia. Therefore i believe the lighting elements on this will truly be built to last and will help make this a definite winner..'

How many cranes do you think this will need? 1 or 2 Luffers? Maybe the heavy duty Favco ones?
They likely didn't drill anywhere near 7 storeys deep. The shale layer is not that deep.

Edit : In case of any confusion, not suggesting these machines can't easily reach 7 storeys deep. It's shaft is telescopic afterall

Can't believe how quiet this thread is. Wish I had gone by there during my update the other day.

Yeah I've been watching it lately as I head to work down Centre. Just always forget my camera to take a pic. Probably couldn't get a good vantage point anyway.

No kidding. Will be one of the tallest buildings in the city and certainly one of the most beautiful/unique! We're spoiled here in Calgary!

By far the most difficult project to photograph right now just because of the depth of the hole. The excavator down in the hole that you can just see behind the orange facing, has a jackhammer tool attachment and is going deeper.

The above picture reminds me of the pits that I saw dug in Seattle, during the summer, for the construction of their underground LRT system. I am not familiar with the geology of downtown Calgary. Any idea, ideally, how deep we would have to dig to accommodate underground tunnels in the core?

31 metres for 7 storeys. That's 8 to 10 metres more than normal. Going to be one thick raft slab.

Around March 8th is when they started to dig this pit. They claimed it would take seven months to excavate. In four days we will hit the seven months mark, so we should soon start to see rebar going to the site.

Question for someone more familiar with building engineering:

If they didn't want or care about underground parking and built zero, how deep would the basement need to be? Other infrastructure would be needed to be placed down there, plus some piling, but is there much depth that would be required for a building of this size and weight?

They aren't excavating today, could they have bottomed out?

Looks like a crane is being erected at the site at the moment.

Edit: you can actually see it in the pictures speedog posted above - red crane.
I wonder if its to lift out the excavating equipment?

I think that's the crane they were using with dirtzilla, just with the boom down. I'm probably wrong though.
