Are you talking about the present Rattenbury building, or the recently proposed future project?

Dominion Office Building by Zaha Hadid Architects.
IMO one can also say that the building is similar but more innocuous than the VAG proposal. As a multi-tenant office building it would be suitable, but as an art institution that wants to be a centre for creative activity and discussion in BC, I suppose they want to set out to make something original and I suppose with some controversy.

To me this comparison really makes me like Herzog's idea:

versus:

(vancity buzz)

No mistake where the Herzog plan is and what it does. The Zaha Hadid building quickly fades into the background, even if you account for putting it into the Vancouver site, IMO.

regardless, this design will have to capture the minds of people if the VAG are to fundraise to build this thing, so we'll see if people warm to it...

What an ugly building! But on a brighter note, I see that the Georgia viaduct hasn't been removed.

Only a portion of it should remain above ground, and that portion shuld be enough to create something interesting.
Building it all underground would be pretty expensive. Also I don't agree at all that it needs to be windowless. Look at the national gallery of canada in Ottawa. I love that building!

I like the future VAG. Very modern but earthy. I like how the VAG integrates with the wood. It's a very inviting VAG.

That pic raises a good point - what are the interior spaces like?

Will there be a large central interior space? or will the space be chopped up?
The reception area looks to have a low ceiling.

The renderings seem to suggest separate escalator banks rather than a central circulation atrium.

Will the circulation through the building orient the guest, or will it be piecemeal?

I'm assuming it will have a large ovular atrium extending all the way to the top.

That sounds super cool. (sorry but the exterior depresses me)

There doesn't appear to be an atrium from the ground level.
The main access looks to be the escalator at the back of this rendering.

The more I look at this design, the more I like it. I think the Arthur Erickson comparisons are apt and a big part of why I like this design: it incorporates the stillness of his best designs and creates a space in contrast to the busier surroundings. If you look at Robson Square and MOA (at UBC) you get that same sense of clean brutalism tied to natural elements, and I feel like these are two of the most iconic and successful public and museum spaces in the province. And personally, I find the design of this building "very Vancouver" for the way it hits a certain sense of juxtaposition (the built with the natural, its calm with the cities business, and a sense of cultural collision), which I think is integral to the identity of the city.

Besides, it's different and Vancouver is hurting for some ambitious, polarizing statements.

(I bet you'd all like it if it were seven hundred meters taller or replaced the urban forest concept with a shopping mall...)

I like it.

I would like to know exactly how all of the money is being spent though, it sounds like a lot of money for the square footage being proposed. After all, this isn't a building that will have a ton of small rooms and complicated electronics. I imagine there will be some high end lighting controls and good security, but what is the real construction cost?

I also heard that the entrance will have some nice pink curtains to welcome you into the space.

Ironically, the bamboo box "thing" has its share of admirers here. Never mind Beijing, or New York, or Montreal, or .......

That sounds nice. Hopefully there aren't any trees or bushes to detract from the entrance visually. If there are they should at least be neatly trimmed.

I think they will be planted in a 'landing strip' to guide visitors inside.

First millisecond reaction was WTF.

After a couple of minutes, I started to like it. The devil's in the details, so I'll withhold judgement until more renderings come out.

What I wanted to see in this conceptual design was something we haven't seen yet in Vancouver, and also something that's not a stereotypical "museum by starchitect" (thanks, Mr. Geary, but no thanks). Something that spoke to Vancouver's past and future, and looked unique enough that it won't be immediately associated with another building in the city or another museum/gallery elsewhere.

I think the design team succeeded on most fronts. I see an inukshuk, a pagoda, Chinese/Kanji characters, Arthur Erickson, and wood -- something that virtually nobody sees in downtown Vancouver.

Of course there will be some people who don't like it. In my opinion, unanimity of opinion on a design as bold as that required for the new VAG would be a disaster.

And, at least it's not a disaster like the ROM.

In all seriousness, I love the idea of using wood but I just don't like how top heavy it is. If they could play around with the proportions a bit I think it would look much better.
