I walked through Fitler Square yesterday and the view of the FMC was incredible. It reminded me of the view of Liberty Place as you walk NE through Rittenhouse.

Does anyone know what's housed in the castle-like building in the above photo ?? I liked it when I was last walking around Philly and snapped a couple of pics. It's my avatar pic. I seem to remember something about some troop or something on the facade out front.

23rd Street Armory just above Chestnut Street. It's used as a venue on occasion.

To elaborate on what VZ said, the Armory is home to the oldest unit in the Army, the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry: http://www.firsttroop.com

When do they start pouring the remaining part of the core? Looks like the steel is all caught up, and at the rate they're going, the glass will be soon.

They are currently erecting steel trusses at the transfer floor, this is where the building transfers from a steel structure to a concrete structure. After this floor is completely erected the rest of the structure will be poured.

Here's a closeup of one of tehshadowbat's photo's showing the complicated floor currently being worked on.

I'm clearly not an expert, but it appears that they're close to completing the supporting framework for the upper floors. The incomplete-looking portion is only going to support the "garden terrace."

Pardon my lack of proper terminology but...

If you look at the rendering again, the bottom portion of the tower is a little chubby and then, roughly at the height of the EVO, it thins out. Right now, the core is about the same height as the EVO and so my guess is that the lack of movement on the core is because they've reached that point where the tower is being reconfigured to the slightly different design of the upper half of the tower.

It's been explained several times. The complexity is due to the fact that the steel on this floor needs to support full concrete floor slabs for the remaining 25 or so floors. That's incredibly heavy. Hence the dense, triangular truss work that's wrapping around the core right now. Concrete will not just be for the core, it will be for the full floor slabs similar to any other residential building in the city.

And yes, the concrete portion will rise significantly slimmer than the steel office portion. A good question was asked recently in regards to CITC - once they reach the hotel portion, will a similar steel-concrete transfer occur?

Just wondering , will the weight of the upper floors be evenly distributed over the core and columns or will the core bear most of the weight ?

I've always loved PRR-style catenary supports like on the High Line and Northeast Corridor. The ex-PRR style catenary supports, along with the rising FMC Tower, make this picture AMAZING!
