more than just shadows on the TBM

IT seems that some workers are now moving around the TBM machine.

I guess their first issue is to see of the darn thing actually even works after a year hiatus.

So the "early September" start (we are now at Sept 20, not exactly early) may actually be real.

Let us assume that the TBM actually starts in the next 10 days and actually digs some dirt, still in this month.

The big question is how far can they go before they hit the next sand lens, clay layer, swamp spot .... and then they have to stop again.

This could go "stop and start" for years.

They're not being forced to stop because of soil conditions. All of the stopping points were planned maintenance stops, and there are no further stops planned until breaking through at the south portal.

They just need to wait for the aliens to leave.

Seriously, unless you have documentation otherwise, your speculation has no basis in reality.

They have had McRaes waste management trucks (usually used for pumping sumps etc.) lined up all day. (still there at 8:30 tonight)

Wonder what is going on?

I'm surprised a larger stink has not been made about the contractor switching from a twin tunnel design to a larger single bore.

The next planned maintenance stop is near Robinson Street. That is why they've spent 6 months and almost $10 Million shoring up the ground and sidelining with the water table there. It's also where I estimate a 50-50 chance of the next sinkhole.

These trucks are at the North Portal? There has been loud noise of pumps and motors all afternoon and evening - that's just over a km from my place and it's been quite loud. Wish I had gone over to see it.

There was some slushy looking dirt coming out of the portal yesterday but I cannot comment on today because I was not home to observe.

Good news. Alice is on the move. Dirt is flying off the conveyor belt and cones set up for truck-and-pups to queue. No trucks lined up yet though.

Dear dpoque

Seven months for a "planned maintenance stop". ... a delay for the opening of the full line from "late spring 2016" to "early 2017".... ?????

Planned???? Maintenance????

There was nothing "planned" about this. Are you saying that "it was the plan all along to delay things by 7 to 10 months".???

The best that can be said is that the good folks at Translink ran into a problem they did not anticipate (or if they did anticipate it, they ignored it and hoped for the best).

Nobody "planned" to dig half way through the route, encounter soil conditions that stopped the TBM for 7 months, and then start to stabilize the area and solve the problem.

Who would do such a thing?

I am glad that something is happening. But I reserve the right to be sceptical about this management team. I don't trust what they say (or don't say) any more.

An anonymous quote that I kept ran "I am not upset that you lied to me, I am upset that from now on I can’t believe you”.

nuff said ... let us hope this works, with no more 7 month planned maintenance stops.

Dear Kisai

Are you sure your argument is oriented correctly? I believe you have it backwards.

I have acres of documentation - right from Tranlink itself.

TBM stops in Feb (more or less) for planned maintenance, restart in mid March.
TBM will restart in mid April due to "planned maintenance".
The a start in May, then in June, then in "early July", (remember the fun we all had with that one). .. with planned maintenance all along the way.
On to "late July", then early August, late August, early Sept (their own website) and finally some "noise" in late Sept.

For the sale of what little credibility that Translink has left, they should just shut the hell up about "planned maintenance".

And, if you don't mind me saying so (or even if you do mind), people should stop kneeling in front of governments with their eyes shut and their mouths open.

The stop locations are planned, but not the duration. The plan was to quickly change the cutting head and start going again, so it should only take a few weeks if everything goes well. It is not coincidence that the TBM always stop under a road instead of someone's house.

There is nothing wrong saying it is a "planned maintenance" but taking longer than originally what was originally planned. Otherwise, how else would you called it?

The next planned stopping location will be at Robinson St.

Those document are not from TransLink. For the 10 millionth time - TransLink has NOTHING to do with EGRT and construction of the Evergreen Line other than paying their 400 million share of the project. This project is 100% on BC MoT, so if you really want to blame someone, at least find the right person, please.

Anyways, the first truck arrived at the TBM site at around 10:45 this morning.

Found something interesting on page 19 of this RFP:

Quote:
Services will be performed at:

BCRTC's Operations and Maintenance Centre:
• OMC 1 Gate House located at 6800 14th Avenue, in Burnaby, BC;
• OMC 2. Gate House Located at 6700 Southridge Drive in Burnaby, BC.

And commencing in January 2017
• Coquitlam Vehicle Inspection facility located in Coquitlam B.C.
First of all, the Coquitlam facility is now officially the "Vehicle Inspection Facility" instead of just vehicle storage.

Second, would the facility be open 4 months later than the rest of the line, or EGRT will be responsible for the security of the site for the few few months of operation, or......

It's good for the responsible parties to be careful this time around, and hopefully EGRT is able to cover all grounds for a smooth boring operation and make up the lost time.

That's not to mention about the new Broadway Station overpass and platform being completed much later in 2017 (yes, yes I know it's TransLink's responsibility for this project rather than EGRT)

What makes you think any part of Evergreen Line will be operational before January 2017?

some progress on the TBM

I must admit that the spoils coming out of the TBM have been consistent for the last 36 hours.

The TBM is moving, no question.

I wish the operators good luck for the last stretch.

The bones of what I think is the Vehicle Inspection Facility started going up several weeks ago. You can see it if you take Dewdney Trunk Road off of St Johns where it changes into Barnet.

Nice to have another SSPer in the area.
