Looks like they will initially take half a floor with seemingly big plans for growth downtown including the possibility of anchoring a new building

From the Tribune:

"One-hundred workers will initially make the move and occupy half a floor of the landmark Downtown skyscraper.
“Eventually it will be much larger ... because we do view ourselves as a growth company,” he said. “Our intention is to have our own building.”
While executives and some corporate functions will leave Kennametal's Unity headquarters, the company plans to keep “a substantial presence” there, including at its technical center, Newlin said. Spokeswoman Christina Sutter said 450 employees will remain in Unity."

It would have been cool if they would have signed on as the anchor tenant to one of the proposed 12-plus story high-rise buildings. I guess since it's only the executive offices moving (they're maintaining the bulk of their employment base in Latrobe if I read the article correctly). So I guess they're only looking to occupy perhaps a floor or two, if that...

It does make me wonder about other large corporations looking to move to/expand, etc to Pittsburgh, particularly Downtown. Weren't there other companies moving to (or closer to) Downtown?

It won't be Downtown. .. Kennametal is looking at PTC and Almono. And while bullish on locating in Pittsburgh, they're also considering the Mistake by the Lake and the dreaded Charlotte, wich has flights to every city in the galaxy.

So it is definitely a step in the right direction, but it is disappointing that the only feeder HS is Westinghouse and that Pittsburgh students will have priority over Wilkinsburg students for magnet programs. The former wouldn't be so bad if the latter were not true, so maybe they can eventually relax that rule.

Another really solid month for jobs in August:

Construction and Leisure/Hospitality in particular are doing very well. Generally speaking this is often representative of a feedback loop from other job growth.

In my opinion PTC or Almono would be great too. That's still contributing to a vibrant city of Pittsburgh with good jobs.

It's ok.... but not nearly as cool or impactful as Downtown. PTC is a poorly designed suburban office park disconnected from the surrounding urban fabric, and Almono is conceptual and geographically remote. Both sites would be more appropriate for Kennametal R&D, but are rather pointless for corporate HQ. Downtown offers unparalleled talent attraction and logistical amenities that Kennametal states is the impulse behind leaving Latrobe.

I don't mind the idea of corporate HQs locating in secondary business clusters within the city if Downtown is a bit too pricey for them. Whether that describes Kennametal is a different question.

Considering they actually are locating Downtown for a few years with the ambition of a new build somewhere eventually, I don't think this describes Kennametal.

Then please post some pictures so that when anyone here is having trouble sleeping thinking about the crime that is on every street corner, we can take a look at those pictures and fall asleep from boredom.
