This perspective is looking east on Centre toward Shadyside. Craig Street is the cross street on the far left of the picture. Turn right and head into Oakland and left to Bigelow Blvd. This building will be right across the street from the CVS. And I think the parking lot on the corner will be gone.

How North Shore Went From No Man’s Land To Budding Business District

It's nice that it isn't just one huge parking lot any more, but it's still kind of sad that this is the best they could come up with. Not that the average person on the North Shore for an event realizes that.

Edit: I'm not even saying that the type of stuff that was/is built there is bad, necessarily, I just think they could have built taller.

Anyway, if the development rights hadn't been given away to the sports teams and instead had been auctioned off to private developers, we'd undoubtedly have more and better development there already. And in fact instead we keep giving them extensions on the nominal development schedule, while we keep letting them hold us up for more public money for parking structures.

North Shore Place in particular is a travesty--it makes sense the teams would want a low-intensity project that would not compete too much for parking but provide bars and restaurants to complement events at the stadiums, but that is a horrible outcome for the City as a whole, and the project was done shoddily as well.

Oh well. At least we didn't repeat all the same mistakes with the Lower Hill site . . . oh wait, yes we did.

True. Although the pg has a story today saying the city is considering buying back development rights from the penguins. And that us steel's current status makes it unclear if they will move forward with the building.

I've been to most of the city works group's restaurants in chicago. They're not amazing, but they are consistently good and have a nice beer selection. I think it will be a win for market square. Finally that last corner will get something with city works, poros, and the new frankuary.

That's pretty clever. If the Penguins demand too much money or otherwise state the development rights are too valuable to give up, it will be an admission that the development rights were a huge public handout. Of course they have the option of just saying, "So what, a deal is a deal, so sue us," but pro sports leagues are still trying to convince people that they are doing cities a favor by agreeing to develop land around their stadiums. So it is possible there would be a lot of league pressure on the Penguins not to take that stance.

That would be fantastic. Frankly, I wouldn't mind seeing the housing plan rebooted as well, but I recognize that is very unlikely.

Ditto. If I understand the article correctly, City Works will basically be taking over that whole corner at Forbes, which is great.

Edit: By the way, that group's other restaurants generally have slightly more interesting names. I'd be interested to know why they settled on the rather generic City Works. But maybe it will make sense once I see it.

After taking a glance at their portfolio, they have a lot of world class designs in there, especially for Edmonton of all places. Hopefully in a future rendering they can give this project the same treatment.

C'mon U.S.Steel keep cutting jobs and piling up losses! Make the construction of a new headquarters look silly, and undoable. I'm so hopeful the planned construction of that 3 story, suburban-looking, space filler is cancelled.
Also, how stupid does the city look right now? They gave the Pens the development rights for free and now want to buy them back. That shows a lot of foresight.

That should serve as a model of how NOT to do city planning. Do NOT get ANY sports franchise(s) involved with land development. Using Pittsburgh as a model, the only thing they'll do is hold the city hostage and subject its citizens to some very shitty development, leading to pathetic uses for otherwise highly valuable land.

BTW, did anyone read in the PG that Kennametal is moving to the US Steel Building?

Yeah, I know they're already established within the Greater Pittsburgh metro, but it's interesting that they're moving to Downtown.

It would have been cool if they would have signed on as the anchor tenant to one of the proposed 12-plus story high-rise buildings. I guess since it's only the executive offices moving (they're maintaining the bulk of their employment base in Latrobe if I read the article correctly). So I guess they're only looking to occupy perhaps a floor or two, if that...

It does make me wonder about other large corporations looking to move to/expand, etc to Pittsburgh, particularly Downtown. Weren't there other companies moving to (or closer to) Downtown?
