Stantec Tower in Edmonton set to be Canada's tallest outside Toronto
GORDON KENT, EDMONTON JOURNAL

Stantec Tower is a part of the Edmonton Arena District (EAD), the joint venture between Katz Group and WAM Development Group.

First the arena, then Connor McDavid, and now Edmonton is going to have a taller building than anything in Calgary.

The Stantec Tower under construction in the downtown Ice District has quietly grown to 66 storeys from 62, making it a 251-metre-high behemoth that will be Canada’s seventh-highest skyscraper.

“Just having the Stantec building at 62 storeys was a huge coup for Edmonton,” Downtown Business Association executive director Jim Taylor said Tuesday.
“If you now tell me that this building is going to surpass anything in Calgary, anything outside Toronto in Canada … this is putting Edmonton on the map as far as the country is concerned, as far as the continent is concerned.”

As well as becoming the Edmonton-based engineering firm’s new headquarters, the project — set to open in 2018 — will also feature about four floors of retail, a grocery store, a pedway to the adjacent hotel and access to a garden roof, according to a development permit released earlier this month.

There will also be 454 condo units on the top 36 floors.

When the roughly $500-million project was unveiled last year, it was intended to have about 320 residential units.

It's a shame that the Edmonton Journal didn't use the latest renderings for Stantec Tower.

Very lazy reporting....

Agreed.

Also it's really impressive that Brookfield 2 will be taller than anything currently in YEG, couple of sharp looking towers there

Moving CITY-TV makes sense since I am sure the TV studio space at Rogers Place is going to be relatively unused other than home games and I am sure it cost a fortune, probably on par with Videotron Center in Quebec City, which was pegged at $30-40 million.

Personally I'm still bummed that Enterprise Square never became a mixed-use shopping/entertainment complex post Bay pull-out. I remember back in the day there was talk of an 24-screen AMC "Jasper Grande" theatre, a Virgin Records mega-store, nightclubs on the lower level... Maybe now, a transition to more anchor-y commercial, yes like Simons/Nordstrom... In theory, the building has/had 360,000 sq ft to play with and I'm sure U of A is only like half that space, right?

Stantec should go for 99 floors to give a Gretzky vibe rather than Mario.

Would be sweet if Calgary and Edmonton get into a game of one-upmanship in the skyscraper department so Alberta can claim "tallest in the country" and put Toronto in second place for a while.

I'm much happier with the redesigned version of Stantec (sans said hat).

There are new advertisements up at the old Glenora Skyline site.

Nothing is written in stone yet, but it's an encouraging sign.
