Unless it's due to one of those infernal viewcones, Cheng has placed the highest point of the building where it will have the weakest effect.

Also, isn't the first public presentation of the First Baptist Church proposal happening this week?

Ugh that would be such a disgrace!! What a misuse of money. The church moved because it was to expensive to have their offices there!!

Wow!!!?? Do you know what a budget is? I was waiting for that response!

What's a disgrace is that they could house more homeless in a more cost effective location/building

Like I said the church moved because it was too expensive. If it's too expensive for them you would think it would be too costly as a shelter. There is only a certain amount of money. Putting a shelter here is being wasteful

One thing I am definitely sure about is that one of the city's next sites for a welfare housing project is the primest last remaining Coal Harbour seawall lot, about a hundred metres from where the Westin Bayshore just sold for a virtually unimaginable $290 Million. The residents should have good access to Urban Fare.

This makes me optimistic about the direction this city is headed in.

Quote:
These latest projects may just be beginning to make their way through the city's approval system, but it's a direction backed by Brian Jackson, Vancouver's planning and development manager.

"It is time that we have a few buildings along significant corridors to gateway locations that cause people to just stop and say, 'Wow! That is extraordinary architecture,'" said Jackson.

Exactly. when land values Dt selling for over 21 million for 1/3 of an acre. How could anyone think it's a good idea to build supportive housing here. They could be proving a lot more housing units if they built out of Dt. Mean while so many people are left to live on the streets. Pathetic

Yea so sell it. Use the money to build housing on cheaper land elsewhere

Edit* now that I think about it. Wasn't it for sale?

Also. Is the land that the back forty is on also part of the church? Or is that totally separate? That would be great to see redevolped with restoring the older buildings

[QUOTE=mcminsen;7164048]I wonder what's going on at the old Catholic Archdiocese building at 150 Robson Street. There is a demolition notice in the door as well as a stop work order. The interior pics below I got through the glass doors.

Doesn't Solterra own that building and the Back 40 restaurant property beside it? I don't think there is a development application on the Archdiocese building yet tho is there?

I think there should be a lot more homeless shelters in Rainbow Lake/Coquitlam area. I know the folks in that area are pretty gracious. What do you think? The homeless can all start taking the new Evergreen line next year.

What's James Cheng's best work in Vancouver? Shangri-La? Let's hope this tower is at least its equal, which at this point isn't asking a lot. I worry though, firstly because it's the king of green glass condo's, and there is a lighting feature, which might be a cheap substitute for decent design.

That list in the CBC story should include the Davie and Hornby proposal. This one I like the most out of all the proposals. This one will have the most dramatic impact at street level (I believe).

Re: 150 Robson Street (former Archdiocese offices), there already is a shelter there and it continues to operate on the third floor. It's been there for decades and predates the presence of all the new condos in the area. The entrance is off of Cambie. When I wait at the #17 bus stop across the street (by the Raffles building) I watch the guys hang out waiting for the doors to open in the late afternoon.

There are always going to be homeless street people in this area as it is a prime panhandling zone. They will sleep in the doorways before they hike out to some shelter far away.

I read all this old stuff keeping in mind that there may be changes in the time that has passed since it was posted:

I hope this is a real proposal, and not just a vision or time filler. Honestly, what is the status with this project? i love it and would be so disappointing if this proposal just faded away.

Actually yes its Amacon. Purchased the Church site for $21,750,000 and the Back Forty pub site for $10,800,000. Plans for redevelopment is imminent.
