[QUOTE=mcminsen;7162605]I don't know what's going on but here are are some pics from a few weeks ago.]

Thanks, I had always thought that building needed some help. Did you happen to notice if they were doing any construction inside? It just looks like new windows in the pics.

New windows for sure on the old Pappas building but I can't remember seeing anything inside. I'll take a closer look next time I'm over that way.

The area in front of St. Paul's Hospital on Burrard Street is getting worked on.

What confuses me is why the city plants trees that will grow and become problematic with the power lines above, why not start trying hardy palm trees where power lines are, no branches and they will grow between the double lines without any obtuse trimming around the lines as the canopy develops. Windmill palms in Utah where it gets colder then here

Am I wrong or is this Frances Bula article in the Globe and Mail the first to publically post a rendering of the Georgia/Alberni Street Kengo Kuma tower?

Nice find, yes, it is.

The article says it was filed with the City this week - so I guess that's why it's now public.

That proposal look like it could be great, need to see more detailed models / renders first.

Also, don't bother barking up the palm tree, while I agree with you that a few select species should be used more often for civic landscaping, it was not met with any love on this forum (even though such exotics seem to be increasing in popularity for home and commercial landscaping, which pleases me). In Japan (another temperate climate where palms are not native) there are palms planted everywhere, and it really does help make a nice atmosphere IMO regarding community parks and gardens (and no, I am not talking about tropical Okinawa).

The renderings of that tower look interesting, but where's all the floor space? I'd love to see the numbers.

The article also has some tidbits about the tower that is going to be proposed for the small triangular site where Georgia and Pender converge (a perfect spot for a tall flat iron-type building). Someone at the public meeting for the Kuma tower said that one of the models or renderings depicted an image of the tower and that it appeared to be as tall, if not taller, than the "jenga" tower:

Quote:
Two striking new towers are being proposed for a key intersection on Vancouver’s Georgia Street that represent a dramatic departure from the city’s traditional style of bland glass condos.

One, designed by local architect James Cheng for new Chinese-Canadian development company Brilliant Circle Group, is a three-faced glass obelisk at the triangle where Georgia and Pender streets meet.

There will be an unusual public space under and around the stilt-like legs of the tower, since the condo floors will start about 25 metres above street level.

The two will create a memorable gateway into downtown Vancouver that is unlike anything the city has seen, said Mr. Cheng, who is designing his building to be a complement to Mr. Kuma’s design.

“It’s deliberate that the two buildings are different. His approach was to take a rectangular building and carve it out, while we’re exploding our building. It’s like a solid and void dialogue.”

The two proposals – Mr. Kuma’s was formally submitted to the city this week and Mr. Cheng’s is due to arrive shortly – were preceded three months ago by another startling tower proposal within a block of those sites.

The more I look at the design, the more I think that it won't have expansive views because the windows are small.

******

I wonder if the James Cheng building is designed to ward off bad Feng Shui?

I wonder what's going on at the old Catholic Archdiocese building at 150 Robson Street. There is a demolition notice in the door as well as a stop work order. The interior pics below I got through the glass doors.

article: "Extraordinary new condo towers aim to give Vancouver the 'Wow!' factor"
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/vancouver-real-estate-condo-towers-1.3228251

architect James Cheng is among those working on a signature building for 1445-1455 West Georgia St.— a 50-storey tower with an 80-foot glass jewel at the base, and walls that resemble the Seattle Library.
Cheng was inspired by repairs to the Washington Monument, which took on a whole new look when it was covered in scaffolding and then lit up.
Cheng's tower will also be lit.

There's a rough rendering of the building in the link provided above.

And a new render of the Kengo Kuma tower! Interesting about Cheng's I can't picture it, but here's hoping he doesn't scree up the location. I am happy to hear about the lighting feature,
