Nah, it's just confidential until the risk of claims has passed or until all claims are settled. I suspect we won't hear what the issues are until a Tunnel Association talk a year or two down the road.

I'm looking forward to being able to give a couple presentations on the Seymour Capilano Twin Tunnels soon. The legal wrap-up often lasts longer than the project though. I helped commission those tunnels from January to March this year. There's not much we can about them yet, other than the fact that you've probably already been drinking the water that passed through them.

The Evergreen line's tracks are being welded instead of bolted:

All of our lines are welded. There's a spot by Scott Road westbound before the SkyBridge that isn't for whatever reason, but most of everything is.

Really? Isn't profile grinding a maintenance process that would only be done a ell into a rail system's life span? Why would a brand new rail line require this - isn't the correct profile forged onto the rail segments at the factory?

The tracks are also like that just after the 2nd tower. I believe they are the equivalent to bridge expansion joints too add some flexibility.

Of interest (but off topic) - article and link to the track "bridges" that'll be needed for Seattle's LRT line across the I-90 floating bridge:

Good to see their LRT expansion moving forward. What is the reason for Lake Washington having two floating bridges? Is the lake too deep for normal bridges? It isn't very wide lake.

It's too deep (there's a lot of silt at the bottom of the lake) for a normal bridge, and there are curves on both routes (I-90 and SR520) so they can't use suspension bridges.

Also the fact that it's a lake makes a floating bridge possible. If that body of water was connected to an ocean they'd probably re-visit one of the other options.

Nine Months Behind Schedule

http://www.theprovince.com/news/evergree...+tunnel+machine+idle/11348327/story.html

Highlights:

MOT says the overall project is 70% complete.

The tunnel is 53% complete today.

Tunnel was started in June 2014, expected to take 7 months. 53% has taken 16 months.

Some talk already about a 2017 opening.

I hate how Jordan Bateman has positioned himself as the go to all knowing transit/engineering /geological expert on all things Translink.

TBM restart

Everyone:

The Evergreen line web site had an update as of August that predicts a TBM restart for "early September".

Well ... direct from the horse's mouth.

Maybe it will get started after all.

Here is hoping.

I love the design of the bridge with the retractable span to open up for marine traffic.

"Resume tunnelling by the end of this week" is sounding just like "resume tunnelling by late July"

No timeline...

BTW - the Minister's comment about opening on time is likely posturing to continue pressure on the contractor.
You can't be seen to acquiesce in a delay (or it might jeopardize your ability to claim damages later) - so they have to continue saying they expect it to be finished "on time" (as adjusted).

No timeline for tunnel boring to resume for the Evergreen Line
by Sonia Aslam
Posted Sep 11, 2015 1:04 pm PDT

PORT MOODY (NEWS 1130) – After promising for months the tunnel boring machine working on the Evergreen Line would be working by the fall, the provincial government now says it doesn’t have a timeline.

The machine has been sitting idle for months; you can blame several sinkholes during construction for that.

Crews have said they were surprised at the conditions of the sandy soil that kept getting stuck in the machine. Repairs have been completed, but the province still doesn’t know when tunnel boring will resume again in the Port Moody area.

Despite all this, Transportation Minister Todd Stone is confident it will finish on time.

“I’m still doing everything that I can to make sure that the Evergreen project team — and through them, the contractors — understand that we still very much expect this project to be up and running within the timeframes that are understood by everyone at this point.”

“There is no question we have lost some time — that’s frustating, but we’re going to continue to do everything we possibly can to get this tunnel work done so that we can proceed with opening this critical addition to the Lower Mainland’s transit network,” he adds.

But in a statement from the ministry, it now says the end goal of the fall of 2016 could potentially be in jeopardy unless everything goes as planned in the coming months, but there are no guarantees.

“We will let people know if there are any further schedule implications. Despite the delay, the contract language is clear: EGRT is on the hook to address any challenges that may arise and will cover all the costs connected to this work. Government will continue to hold EGRT to their agreement.”

“This was a key part of the contract we signed in order to protect British Columbia taxpayers from the costs of any potential challenges. This includes all delays associated with the project and any extra costs related to the tunnel boring machine.”

Tunnel almost complete after five years

http://globalnews.ca/news/2214719/huge-water-tunnel-under-the-fraser-river-nearing-completion/

No more dry spells in Surrey.

There's hope for the Evergreen tunnel...

The earliest that the Evergreen line can open is February 2017. And that calculation depends on the TBM restarting this month.

The bulletin from the Translink web site says that the TBM restarts in "early September" .... I guess anything before the 29th of this month is "early".

I just can't see it any other way.
