Funny how the tan coloured building to the left of Le 1000 Rue de la Gauchetière looks like a miniture version of the highrise front and centre in the last Winnipeg pic (the Richardson Building according to the diagrams page)

^ Richardson Building is actually, so far as I can tell, a lighter-coloured knockoff of Saarinen's CBS Building in Manhattan. Here's a model of the CBS... it looks just like the Richardson except for the cornice:

I've walked by the CBS Building and at the base it is shocking how much it looks like the Richardson.

Place du Canada has a pretty strong resemblance too, I never really noticed that before. Clearly a popular look in the 1960s.

The last Montreal pic makes me realize how Downtown would look less underwhelming if there wasn't a mountain right behind it... Don't know if it's just an impression, but that's the feeling I get.

Don't get me wrong though, I love the Mount Royal and wouldn't want it gone

I'd say there's no doubt. I mean, the tallest buildings in Montreal are a full 2/3 the height of Toronto's tallest and not much shorter than Calgary's. When looking at it from a distance at night time when the mountain sort of becomes invisible, you really get a better sense.

I don't think it makes much of a difference. Vancouver always has mountains in the background (albeit much, much taller mountains) and they don't take away from the skyline.

But they're not right beside the skyline. To me it's the difference between building a 30 story building right beside a 20 story one as compared to a 100 story building across town.

I think they are close enough, the scale of the coast mountains completely overwhelms the Vancouver skyline at times. Either way, my personal opinion is that Mount Royal doesn't take away from Montreal's skyline and provides a fantastic place from which to appreciate it.

Totally agree. But Downtown Montreal is built ON the mountain whereas Vancouver's Downtown is built on flat land. I think that makes a difference.
