And they were right. Downtown is really coming alive! We were there from about 4 until 7:30 and even at 7:30 there were still lots of people floating around, walking by, and Famoso was packed inside and out.

Pretty awesome makeover this city has seen.

Now only if the City would step up and improve the absolutely crappy, falling-apart sidewalks, curbs, and streets in the downtown core.

Well they are re-building the sidewalk on the north side of the 19 Block of 11th, but it is solid concrete - no bricks and they are paving over all the tree boxes for the trees they chainsawed down earlier this year.

I do not believe the City has planted a single tree downtown this year. they have also paved over tree boxes in front of the Bay and across the street around Malt City. Shame.

It'd be great to see some more street-scaping done downtown. Would be cool to see something like the lighting features on Granville Street in Vancouver done on some of the major routes around downtown (Broad, Vic, Albert, Sask dr). It'll tie into the new plaza really well.

I agree that it's a shame the City didn't include tree boxes in any of the new development. But, I feel they gave up trying to nurture trees downtown long ago (definitely making no effort at planting new trees... debatable how much effort they're putting into the trees that already exist).

The empty boxes speak volumes, and are an eyesore (the ones on Rose/Sask have 3-4' tall weeds in them... gaining on the height of the pathetic trees in the boxes), not to mention a tripping hazard (read: liability) - so, while I'd like to see infrastructure to support trees, if the City's not committed to them long-term, get rid of the boxes.

Are you sure yesterday was the switch-over? Hotel Sask isn't available on Mariott's booking site, and can still be booked through Radisson's site. It's also not listed on the Marriott Autograph Collection page.

Delta is listed as a Marriot brand on the site, though.

I would prefer weeds over them being paved in all honesty. I don't see why they can't substitute trees for something easier to handle? You wouldn't get the shading qualities from, say, native grasses, but it would certainly add to the streets that are apparently doomed from having trees.

Well they did it on Lorne Street last year. They even put in special soil cells to help the new trees. Everywhere else they are totally neglecting and not replacing trees. It is a real shame.

It looks like they have changed the name of the dining room at the Hotel Sask to Circa27 Dining Room. It had been the Ranch Room forever until that lost its panache. More recently it was called the Cortlandt Dining Room.

1927 was the year the hotel was built.

It's the Victoria's Tavern/Leopold's people. And I haven't heard any indication that it's becoming a pub. It's a pretty small footprint so it'll probably stay office.

Something else to consider is that the more items curbside, the harder it is for the city to do snow removal etc. There are some blocks downtown where between light posts/street signs/bus shelters/trees/fire hydrants/newspaper boxes there just isn't enough room to effectively remove snow from the curbside.

What's a real shame about any young trees downtown, including a couple of ones on the 1800 block of Lorne Street, is that there are some idiots who think it is funny to break branches.

I'm not sure that's a valid excuse. There are plenty of winter cities with much more going on curbside/streetside (including lots of trees).

It might actually be quite close to Leopold's footprint, minus the patio, but plus an additional floor. It wouldn't surprise me if it did happen.

Let's put it this way. The owners are planning to move their offices into the building since Ragged Ass is moving into their previous offices. That would leave, at best, one floor for a pub. which would be smaller than Leopold which is already tiny. Possible, yes. Probable, no. It's also a terrible location even by downtown standards.

As a serious, longtime craft beer lover, I dont enjoy places with mega tap lists. The #1 problem is finding enough quality beers to fill those taps. The #2 problem is that with so many taps, each keg sells slowly, resulting in a lot of old stale beer being served.

I far more prefer and appreciate a well thought out smaller taplist with fresh high quality beers. With all of the exciting new high quality local craft breweries, places can easily put together a great taplist with SK breweries only. In places with a more advanced craft beer culture, this is the norm.

This happened at the city planning commission meeting tonight. The building being demolished is the vacant WCB buildling. Is the city completely rolling over on its no-surface-lots plan?
